Have you read Morgan's Free Rangers by calamitycrow? It's an alternate history western set in the 1850's (more info here) with Jensen as a rancher's son turned ranger and Jared as a bookseller seeking freedom (from family/obligations) and adventure. It was really fascinating and immersive.
