“Bones, you in?” Jim Kirk calls out to his best friend and flatmate. It takes a further 4 shouts to locate Leonard McCoy. He’s under a pile of study books - no surprise there.
“Hey Bones, how’s studying going?” Jim asks hoping it doesn’t sound like he doesn’t care.
“Yeah, how was your run?” Bones asks hoping it doesn’t sound like he doesn’t care.
“Yeah. . .” Jim sighs, “That Russian Whizkid lapped me again.”
“Well, that’s why he’s called a Whiz kid, right?”
“No, Bones,” Jim sighs again.
“I’m joking, jeez! You shouldn’t be too upset. He’s training for the Academy Marathon.”
“Twice, Bones. He lapped me twice. And, well, so am I. . .” Jim trails off, rethinking his plan to run this year. He’d never beat that kid.
“Hey maybe you and Whiz kid can train together,” Bones suggests, hoping that Jim leave him to study.
“Maybe,” Jim says, not giving it much thought.
“You afraid he’ll leave you behind?” Bones laughs. It almost dares Jim to ask the kid.
“No. I just think he has, like, his own running group.” Jim lies. He’s only ever seen the kid run alone.
“What? He leaves them behind too?” Bones laughs as he digs his way back into the study books.
Jim’s about to say something but he leaves it. He sets off to his room to rehearse what he’ll say to the young Russian next time they meet.
It’s the next day when Jim gets to act out his plan. As the kid takes a few minutes to warm up, Jim seizes the opportunity.
“Hey,” he smiles, brightly. The kid simply nods. Wow! He’s not following the script in Jim’s head. He underestimated the ease of conversation, and this kid. “I’m Jim,” he offers.
“Pavel Chekov,” announces the Russian, accent particularly strong. It’s almost as if he’s introducing himself to a high ranking official.
“You training for the Marathon?” Jim asks, knowing it’s a stupid question. Pavel merely points to his running shoes. “Of course,” Jim adds with a smile. “So, erm. . .”
“You vant to train vith me?” Pavel asks, knowing what Jim’s asking, even if Jim himself doesn’t.
Wow, Pavel isn’t following Jim’s made up scenario at all, but it’ll work this way. He is asking all the right questions. Jim simply smiles.
“You better keep up,” Pavel flashes him a smile before he dashes off.
The next time Jim sees him is when the young Russian laps him. Jim stops running, as does Pavel. Jim begins laughing.
“I might as well just give up,” Jim breathes, “Bones was right.”
“You shouldn’t give up.” Pavel tries to encourage.
“I’d rather just watch you,” Jim decides.
Pavel laughs, “You-”
“No, no, you,” Jim’s breathe is actually getting shallower. He’s bent over, but still makes an effort to look at Pavel He doesn’t even look as though he’s breaking a sweat.“You,” Jim repeats, “were the only reason I was coming here.”
Pavel laughs again, but then Jim’s word start to sink in.
“I- Me- You-?” Pavel didn’t know what to say.
“I’ll. . . .just watch you from the side lines,” Jim decides with a smile. He stands up right, still breathing heavy.
Pavel looks confused, but then Jim smiles and raises his eyebrows. The rest they say is history. . .
