So there's this really terrific lightning storm right now, very close in to Northwest Bellingham and if the lessening seconds before the thunder is any indication, it's moving closer. It's about T - 7:00:00 'til that recycling truck wallops down the alley and wakes me up...do I brave the storm with a basket of aluminum in hand now, or make a feeble attempt at beating the truck tomorrow? Being an early riser is not my forte.
I see a few options. I take the basket out, get struck by lightning, and everyone thinks I'm an idiot. I make the Darwin Awards, trend high on Reddit, local news, cautionary tale, blah blah blah.
"It was just like him, booksmart, but not a damn bit of common sense," said anyone who ever knew me.
Or I take it out, get struck, but am only terrible maimed. "What a sweet guy, never forgetting an obligation! He couldn't let those housemates down and he cared so much for the environment he had to trudge out there! Poor little bastard."
Or, seeing as Prop Eight was just repealed, conservatives could go for a classic angry-God response. "Smitten by lightning! That's where the gay lifestyle leads, boys and girls!" Say the signs Fred Phelps holds outside my funeral.
Or I take it out, get almost struck, and no one would believe me. "Five feet away? Bullshit. And why the hell were you carrying a thing of aluminum cans, anyway?"
I could be a pussy and stay in, and let the cans pile up. Or the final and most likely scenario...take it out, set it down, walk back inside, go to sleep and wonder why the hell my mind imagines all these other things.
