The case against "Camisadoluvsu"

Nov 15, 2009 16:38

On November 3rd, slashfiend337 reported several instances of plagiarism against camisadoluvsu. The original post can be found here.

When I contacted camisadoluvsu, I received this reply:

I had read those stories before and had obviousuly rememebered them which is why they have resemblences. No one else has acceted this so i don't expect you too. I spent hours writing those fics, the storylines are similar and a few lines are similar. I have read loads of PWP fics that are soo similar.

BTW this profile is for RL friends only, I wasn't thinking of posting on this one. TBH all the shit thrown my way made me want nothing to do with the scene. They're bullies.

Thanks you

After going through the stories, it appears that very specific plot points were followed throughout their entirety. However, she would often change the perspective in which the story was told. This change was responsible for variations in lines (and often grammatical errors) while keeping the flow and pacing the same as the originals. It also appears, in all cases, she shortened the stories removing most of the non-PWP elements.

There is no doubt she tried to make these stories ‘her own’ with the subtle rewrites. While her claim of reading many PWPs may account for ‘common phrases,’ the stories have too many similarities to be accredited to the hive mind.

In the original story “Sugar, we’re going down” by nyquil_love the fic itself is 951 words long. The plagiarized version (untitled and written for a kink meme) is only 391 words. Several descriptive factors were removed all the way through, making it an abridged version on the original. This, coupled with the perspective change, account for many of the differences. However, many lines appear in both the original and plagiarized versions. (All word counts referenced as per Microsoft Word)

Examples of the 'rewriting' and perspective change: (Warning: I tried to keep these passages as clean as possible, though you may find ‘adult oriented’ overtones.)

Original by nyquil_love:

So apparently her friends at school told her that she absolutely must try this. You don’t know what you're missing. (Removed descriptive content)

I wish her stupid friends would have sent her home from school with an instruction manual or something.

VS. camisadoluvsu’s untitled version

His friends at college told you that you just had to try it. “ You don’t know what you’re missing,’’ they say. (Removed descriptive content, however condensed from 42 words to 17 words)

He was starting to wish that they had set him home with an instruction manual.

Second example:

The original story, “Friends Make the Best Lovers” (by nyquil_love at 4302 words)

“What’s that?” This whole situation was making Ryan pretty uncomfortable. His best friend’s girlfriend had him backed up against a bathroom sink, not wearing pants.

VS “Trinity” (camisadoluvsu’s abridged version at 1803 words)

“ What’s that?’’ Adam wasn’t sure what to think. His best friend’s wife was backing him against the sink, in her underwear.

All the stories follow this pattern, including rhythm, format, and dialog breaks. In another instance, she has taken a story that was 9,989 words (The one Where Brendon gets knocked up by arctic_grey) and shortened it to 1604 words (This one time, Adam turned into a girl) leaving only the PWP aspects and omitting all ‘plot centric' ideas.

As for the claim of her re-using her own ideas for other fandoms - this is something that by ‘technical definition’ may be considered plagiarism at its core. However, it is something that our community has not dealt with in-depth. To follow up on those accounts would lessen the claims against those authors whose stories were taken without permission. As a situation such as this would be looked at in a case by case basis, I have decided not look into those claims further - and chalk it up to lack of ambition and creativity on camisadoluvsu’s part.

Again, if it was only the lines sited, it may fall under a category or truly be a ‘hive mind’ aspect. However, she went through entire stories line for line ‘rewriting’ while using this identical premise. As every example claimed on the original post follows these patterns, plus the evidence provided, camisadoluvsu will be added to the list of known plagiarists.

Note: As no private messaging information was listed on camisadoluvsu's account, I did contact her on a secondary one. As a rule, we do not list that until there is an infraction against that user name. I checked the three stories then posted (but subsequently removed) and could not find any counts of plagiarism.
