On September 27th,
nordvestligen reported
a case of extensive plagiarism in Deadliest Catch fandom. The complain concerned ff.net user
The Real Bayliss, believed to be the account of
snowymistyriver. Of the stories posted there, 18 belong to
nordvestligen, 34 belong to
bayliss (whose idenity the plagiarist is also attempting to claim, possibly to cover up the plagiarism) and 4 others also belonged to writers in Deadliest Catch fandom. All these writers have confirmed they have given no permission for their fics to be reposted. Another story was revealed to have been plagiarised from Abigail Coates, and it seems therefore very likely that the entire account consists of only plagiarised work. That would make it 62 accounts of plagiarism - 57 proven for sure.
Examples of the plagiarism:
Ghostly (screencapped original) vs
Ghostly (plagiarised version).
Wizard Vampire (screencapped original) vs
Deadliest Catch Vampire Crews (plagiarised version).
Blood red roses (original) vs
Blood red roses (plagiarised version).
Checks and Unbalanced (original version) vs
Checks and Unbalanced (plagiarised version).
Your g33k is showing (original version) vs
Your geek is showing (plagiarised version).
(More screencaps are avilable on my photobucket account
here and can be compared to the plagiarised versions screencapped in the original report, or at ff.net itself.)
I have been unable to contact the plagiarist, as they have disabled e-mail on their ff.net account and the LJ account alleged to be theirs have enabled the privacy options for their messages for the time being as well as having disabled comments on their only visible LJ entry. I have not been able to find other avenues to make contact with them. However, as the examples show, the plagiarism is word-for-word, and even title-for-title in the majority of the cases. There is little doubt this is very blatant plagiarism.
Given the evidence,
The Real Bayliss will be added to the list of known plagiarists. As I cannot establish for certain that
snowymistyriver is behind the account, but due to the circumstansial evidence to suggest so,
snowymistyriver will be added to the watch list.
ETA: The plagiarist has apparently made a string of accounts, claming to be
bayliss. Known fake account include
bayliss_76,
a DreamWidth account and
a WordPress account. None of these are genuinely
bayliss, and seem to be an attempt by the plagiarist to claim it isn't plagiarism after all. (Ignoring the fact that the plagiarism also included several other authors' works.) This case seems to go beyond plagiarism and well into harassment.
