This was the big day, and Zechs was uncharacteristically clumsy this day. Of all days. A brush got tangled in his hair, and after prying it gently away, he knocked over the apples Une gave him and Noin. Luckily, the only thing that went right was his uniform being in pristine condition. He may not have handled it well otherwise.
Zechs took one last look in the mirror, wondering how he got to this point in life. One day he was a blond-headed boy wondering why his fellow academy cadet was crying, and the next...they were in love. A rocky road along the way, not excluding their own arguments and ideals clashing, but they miraculously made it.
He ran into Noin as he exited, looking to her with a loving smile, entwining their pinky fingers while they continued onto their destination. Their rings were in his pocket. That was another thing that went right: remembering the rings.
Truthfully, he hadn't noticed they were late until he saw Une's face upon their entrance. He fully expected to run laps until he vomited, but she simply asked if they were ready. Zechs gave a nod as well, squeezing her hand in reciprocation.
"Forward, if you please. Pardon the lack of a wedding march."
She watched them with their hands clasped together and noted the nervousness in their body language. It was customary to offer assurance, wasn't it?
"You've both faced battle with less fear than this," mused Une aloud. "Seems your greatest weakness has always been each other. With this, you turn weakness into strength."
And she clears her throat before lending her tone more formality...
"We are gathered here today to celebrate the marriage of not just two of Preventer's finest agents but of two individuals who have weathered war and the end of the world itself to find themselves at each other's side. The honor of officiating this union has been graciously bestowed upon me as Preventer's leader. However, before I declare them husband and wife, the couple will first present their vows."
It was strange speaking as if there was a huge audience but that was what the ceremony protocol dictated...
How right was Une right now. He faced death more than three times, and managed to walk away with minor to severe damage. Marriage...was on a different level than death. Their lives would be in each other's hand from now on, and he wasn't always sure if he could do right for her.
Time to find out.
They walked forward, listening to Une's words. He was glad they chose her to perform the ceremony. It would indeed be memorable if he was getting warm all over. He took out the rings, not even having a box for them. No real point, really. He handed Noin the one for him, holding hers before saying his vows.
Which...would be adlibbed.
He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out the first time. With a deep breath, he tried again.
"...Lucrezia, we've been through a lot, for a long time. Most of it because my personal problems that dragged you into them. This may sound cruel, but I'm eternally grateful for your presence throughout them." He paused, swallowing a lump in his throat. It was never easy for him to express himself between them both, let alone with another person present.
"I'm not perfect. Far from it. I'm still not sure how you tolerate me," he chuckled, positioning the ring onto her finger, not yet pushing it down. "But with this ring, I pledge to be the best for you, because I love you. I don't want to see you cry again." The ring was finally pushed down in place.
Noin also had listened to Une and had taken her time to muse and consider what path she was taking - but...she couldn't be afraid of it. Not even really...nervous. Honestly, what most worried her would be that she would lose him from all this..obvious pressure and ceremony. Still protective of him, even now, still loyal.
She gazed at him, but said nothing, studied his lips and absorbed his words, the hesitancy obvious, but his emotion...real.
A smile won rights to her expression, and she grew lightly pink from her own selfish happiness at the moment, and exhaled a breath she hadn't realized she was holding once he was finished and the pale, simple silvered ring glimmered gently against her skin.
But she didn't bother with it, she just looked at him, then down as she retrieved the other from him with a gentle kiss to his fingertips.
Then, slowly, keeping her gaze locked with his, she spoke with a simple smile. "Milliardo Peacecraft... It has been nearly ten years since I fell in love with you, ten years since that...date we had amongst the stars while drinking tea and eating treats like nothing could ever touch us." A soft laugh. "I have never been able to seriously think of anyone else since then, as...strange as it sounds. I was always grateful for the time you spent with me, the times that you - no, you - tolerated me. I would never give up the times we have spent, good or bad because... with this ring, you're mine, finally..." An awkward chuckle as she moved the ring to his fingertip, trying to figure out how to express just how much more this meant. "And I wouldn't have it any other way because I love you, and I'm so very happy to be by your side, to protect you, and to love you for as long as I can..." The ring was slid onto his finger and Noin continued to smile, her hands and gaze steady.
Une simply nodded her assent. As Zechs had told her while they had been sorting out the miscellany, he was opting to use the "Peacecraft" name for this. She supposed it was an intimacy he wished to share with Noin.
"Milliardo Peacecraft. Lucrezia Noin. With the power vested in me by the Earth Sphere Unified Nations, I now pronounce you husband and wife."
Using his name went beyond intimacy. It was a favor. And they certainly did know what to do.
Zechs gave Noin a brilliant smile before leaning down, pressing their lips together to make their love, their commitment, official. If this was a dream, he'd gladly continue on.
A few moments and her heart skipped a beat and she looked at him. Well, well, he had bothered to share that with Une - it showed a great amount of..faith, really, that he would do so, and it made her...warm.
The smile he gave her was met with her own, her purple eyes lighting up and her face coloring in pleasure before she too leaned just a little up to meet him, sighing softly as their lips met. One official kiss, and all that legal mumbojumbo was behind them.
It couldn't have come at a better time, and Noin knew she wasn't dreaming. No dream would ever be this good.
Une was content in her silent observation. She supposed the wasted afternoon learning the basics of that ceremony had been worth it. If they had been back on the Earth Sphere, she would have had to help file the paperwork too. Things, however, were different here. The three of them would be spared that particular rigor. Besides, this was largely symbolic. The ESUN which had given her the power was defunct, after all.
She cleared her throat.
"And that ends that. Exit as you please. I'll take my leave after you."
To be fair, she was curious. Were they the type to run out hand in hand? Or would Zechs carry Noin out? It was good to see things through to a proper conclusion.
