It wasn't his fault they hadn't gotten a competent advanced chemistry teacher this time. So what if he'd poked holes into the teacher's lecture every thirty seconds? It was either that or just sleep in the class. Poking holes was considerably more entertaining. But apparently it pointed toward some sort of 'issue with authority figures' and they'd shipped him off to the school shrink.

Someone was already in there with the good psychologist when he arrived, so he just flopped down in a questionable comfortable chair outside the door and commenced to take the nap he should have taken in class.

Just as Ed was settling into a proper doze, the psychologist's office door opens, emitting a tearful young... something. The little yellow-skinned alien, however, was accompanied be a more familiar and decidedly girl-shaped person, who handed it a cookie.

"Don't worry, everything will be okay... You just remember what I said, alright? I promise, it'll help...."

Looking over, her eyes lit up with recognition.

"Ed! Are you my next appointment?"

Ed blinked up at her once he stopped staring after the yellow alien.

"You're the shrink?"

The yellow alien moves off back to class, munching the cookie, and Polly holds out her hand, inviting Ed into the office.

"Shrink..? I guess so... This month, anyway. Come on in, I've got koalas! They actually do seem to help a little!"

Ed hauled himself to his feet and stepped inside, spotting the koalas just as she mentioned them.

"Koalas? Those bear things over there?"

She nodded.

"They're marsupials--I met them at my job last month, and the labs let me borrow them. It seems to help people, to have something to pet."

She settled back down behind her desk propping her chin on her hands.

"So, did you need a... shrink?"

Ed planted himself in one of the chairs across from her, still eying the koalas. He wasn't quite sure he wanted to pet them.

"Tch, of course not. The chemistry teacher just got all bent out of shape when I kept pointing out the flaws in his lecture. Said I had 'obvious problems with authority' and told me to report here. Whatever. At least I don't have to listen to him butcher a straightforward science."

The koalas, for their part, eye him right back, blinking at him with sleepy, ink-black eyes. One of them flicks a fuzzy ear. It might be a dare.

Polly gave a thoughtful hum.

"Maybe you could be a teacher, yourself, one month. I bet you'd be really good at it!"

Nope. Ed refuses to take that dare and folds his arms across his chest.

"Me? Teach? I dunno... I'm pretty busy working for Mr. Wayne as it is."

She perks up a bit, curiosity piqued.

"A lady who lives on my floor works for him too! What do you do?"

"I'm down in the labs. Right now I'm doing some research on 'alien' metal alloys."

"Oh, I thought you might've been a Preventer, too. But lab research sounds interesting! See, you know all of the things you'd need to, to teach things like that--this proves it! And it's something you really like and that's important for a good teacher!"

"Preventer? No, that's too organized and official for my taste. It puts me in mind of the army even if their aim is non-lethal defense. Not that Mr. Wayne would approve of anything unsavory. Anyway, I don't know if I'd be that good a teacher. People always complain I use language that's too technical when I explain stuff."

"But then the students could ask you, and you could teach them what they mean."

Nonetheless, she shrugged, letting the idea go. She'd tried working two jobs, herself, aside from school, and she knew how hard it could be.

"Aside from the professor being angry at you, have things been okay, since the party?"

She would go right for that topic, wouldn't she?

Ed sighed and rubbed the back of his neck.

"Yeah, things have been okay."

Mostly.

"I just keep thinking... Ran Fan and I talked about a lot of stuff. And then there was the whole thing with the... flowers. And it's--it's all just really confusing."

She sat forward a bit with a curious, concerned frown.

"What's confusing? What did you talk with Ran Fan about?"
