This is a public notice to say that I’m resigning from the Guard, but not without a good reason. Guards? It was an honour working with you.
The reason I’m doing this is that I’m setting up a police force, thanks to Fugue’s generosity. We’ll be called the Watch, because our job’s to keep our eye on things. Our focus will be on keeping the peace, preventing crime from happening, and when it does, dealing with it accordingly. We’ll be working apart from the Guard, although we will cooperate when times call for it. The Watch will patrol, watch for potential dangers and investigate. And since I know some of you may have a hazy idea of what constitutes as a crime, I’ll be happy to explain. Broadly, crimes are what harm others: stealing, hurting, murdering.

We need people, so if you’re interested in joining up, come see me. You’ll need to know how to protect yourself and you’ll have to be honest and trustworthy. We’re not going to be a mob going about with weapons, though, I’ll make that clear right now. We’ll also need people with brains, the type of people who’ll be able to figure things out and delegate. Speaking of delegation, that’s exactly the premise we’ll be operating underneath. As we get bigger, we’ll start up some ranks, spread out the power.

I know plenty of you’ll want to hash out the details, and even more of you will have a problem with what we’re doing. That’s why I’m saying this now. If any of you have something to say, don’t sit there and simmer over it. Come out here and say it, and well, I’ll deal with that the best I can. I’ll answer any questions you’ve got here, too.
This is a big step for most of us, but I say it’s about time this place got some laws.
