Elizabeth Blount was born in 1502, the daughter of a low-ranking member of Henry VIII's court. She served as one of Queen Catherine's maids-of-honour for a number of years before she was married in 1522 to a baron who died eight years later. A second advantageous marriage followed, this time to the Earl of Lincoln. She became lady-in-waiting to Anne of Cleves, only to resign the position due to infirmity. Shortly thereafter, she succumbed to consumption at her estates in Lincolnshire, at the age of thirty-eight.
Hers was a life that would hardly have been remarked on over the course of history, save for one thing. She gave birth to me. As was the fashion of the time, her direct contribution to my upbringing was minor at best. That may have been the most generous gift she could have given as a mother. It simplified the political wrangling.
