He’d remembered on Friday. Today was the day he left Stoatshead to spend the last weeks with his mum before her death nearly a year ago. It hadn’t been a shocking realization that made him curl up in a darkened corner or cut himself off from everyone else. No, it had been that cold clench of his stomach, the sudden tightness as his heart seemed to slow and his world filled once more with the mottled greys and the darkness that had nearly consumed him before.
Dean didn’t understand how he could feel so alone as he wandered into the lobby at Hammerside. It was bustling once more and he watched as people brought their children in for dance lessons with Fleur or strode into the Fitness Center with a purpose or stopped at Dennis’ stand for a smoothie. Still, that pervasive feeling of solitude filled him and while he stood over the duck pond, he couldn’t figure out why.
He was surrounded by people who he cared about but as he threw a piece of bread into the pond, Dean realized what he’d felt was true. Dean hadn’t told anyone that the day of his mum’s death was nearing because it just didn’t feel right. He hadn’t seen Dennis since the Hammerside Dance although he’d seen his friend flit to and fro with a man Dean didn’t know. Dean wondered why Dennis was keeping his affairs secret now after the friendship they’d shared but he wouldn’t question his mate. Seamus was splitting time between home and Stoatshead and he and Dean barely saw much of each other. Ernie was busy planning for his wedding and working, so other than a few business meetings and telling Dean what he needed for the wedding, he didn’t see Ernie much either. Making an appointment with Orla seemed to be overkill and Parvati’s workload had increased along with the time he spent on his projects, so she and Dean barely saw each other any more than a hello in the morning and a good night when they went to bed, even though they lived together.
Really, all that left was Fleur to talk to and she and Dean made a point to see each other every morning for coffee. He worried about her because she didn’t seem as chipper as normal lately and while he knew that Oliver took good care of her, she was Dean’s friend and seeing her this way worried him.
She was the reason he finally stood and made his way through the crowd, feeling like a stranger in his own building. He knew that her class was just about ending and they’d be able to talk for a bit. After he picked up two smoothies, he walked into her studio, he saw her wiping herself down and he noticed again, she looked pale. Still, he didn’t say anything about her appearance as he walked over and held a smoothie out to her while he smiled, “I don’t think you could cram another tyke in here, Fleur. How’re you doing?”
