Ernie had spent the morning puttering around the yard. He'd straightened the shed, weeded the flower beds, and mowed the grass with the mowing machine. Anything to keep his mind off of the fact that he was meeting with Orla this afternoon. Finally, though, it was time for his appointment and, after a quick shower, he set off down the pavement toward her house. Unfortunately for him, it only took a few minutes.
Eleanor didn't even know that he was doing this. He didn't want to raise her hopes in the altogether likely event that it didn't work. Steeling himself, he knocked on Orla's door and waited for her to answer it.
