If Remus had been nervous before meeting the other professors for their 'in-service', nothing could have prepared him for the first day of classes. He had told Minerva that he would be happy to give the start of term speech. He just didn't realise the enormous sense of responsibility that would fall on his shoulders by those three little letters: 'y-e-s'.

It was almost as if Albus had been sitting on his shoulders while he wrote the speech. He didn't trust himself to extemporize without a pre-written speech.

This time, though, he did wind up sleeping on the couch in his study (in his own house no less!). Severus had said he could put up with one night of restless werewolf. So in the end, Remus had left the bed to Severus and curled up on the couch. It didn't matter much, Remus felt as if he may have slept only an hour over the course of the night. It was coffee in the morning, rather than tea, that was Remus' wake-up. Well, that and 'extra-curricular' activities which involved a creative use of both silencing and cleaning spells. It was his wake-up from Severus that left him more relaxed than anything.

When the owls had gone out to the students in the middle of August, it had outlined the first two days of school. A student 'orientation' on Wednesday with classes actually beginning on Thursday. The small bag of multi-coloured stones was grabbed just as he left the house with Gilen in tow.

Remus filled his position at the Head table, feeling rather strange to be sitting so close to the centre. The last time he had taught, he had been way towards the other end. Students began to file into the school and taking their places at the tables. Some things were very much the same, there were still four long tables for each of the houses. This year, though, there would be no sorting hat. Merely a random drawing of stones to place each student into their groups. Perhaps once the school became more like a boarding school they'd come across something a little more scientific.

At the nod from Minerva, Remus moved to the centre of the dais, very much aware that every eye was on him. His voice cracked on the first word, but soon he found his rhythm and began to speak, barely glancing at the notes he had made the night before.

"Welcome students, to the first year of the school, here in residence at Stoatshead. It seems strange to come to school not by train, but by walking to the grounds -- and to a building, not a castle. Yet, the changes are for the best and my fellow professors and I are more than looking forward to our first year together as well as many more to come.

"For those who have heard of Hogwarts from your parents and grew up on the stories of the houses, we shall not disappoint. However, we have no hat to sing and regale us with tales, but rather a simple bag of stones. Each and every student shall be called forwards and will pull one stone from the bag. The colour of the stone will dictate which house you will be in as well as your classes. We want your house to be like your family -- all victories are felt by the rest of your housemates and all defeats will be mourned by all. However, the houses are here to give you a sense of unity not to segregate you. Keep that in mind.

"Before we continue, let's begin with the sorting." Remus glanced at Minerva who had wheeled her chair up beside Remus, unrolling a long piece of parchment.

"Aberin, Robert."

And the sorting had begun.
