Zach left the school and Apparated to his flat. He was nervous as hell about tomorrow, but the last two days at least had gone okay. How could he be a professor? Groaning, he went into the kitchen and grabbed a glass, filling it with water from the tap and drinking it, hoping that would settle his stomach. There wasn't even time to sit down and rest when he heard the floo and his Mother's voice asking if he was home.
"Yeah," he called, going into the living room. He had to listen to about ten full minutes of instructions, and how Adair wasn't to stay up late and what he wasn't to feed him and rehashing his supply list until Zach was barely restraining from rolling his eyes. He could hear Adair on the other end, complaining for their mum to hurry up and Zach had to smile at that. The boy had balls... or else he was very stupid.
The same could be said for Zach. Adair got it honest.
Finally, she bade him goodbye and a moment later Adair was tumbling out of the floo, all summer-blond hair and tan skin, grinning at him with soot on his nose.
"You've grown," Zach said, giving him a half hug and scrubbing a hand over his hair. "You'll be as tall as me before you know it."
"It won't take much," Adair said, sniggering. "You're short."
Zach glared at him and shoved him away. "Brat. Put your things in my bedroom. We'll go as soon as Mandy gets here. Where do you want to eat?"
Adair went into his bedroom, swinging his overnight bag with enough force that Zach was momentarily worried about his lamp in the hallway. But he missed and tossed it onto the bed, bounding back with all the exuberance of an almost teenager. "The five alarm. Is she your girlfriend now?"
Zach glanced at him and smirked slightly. "You can't have any of my ale, mother will kill me, so don't ask. And yeah. Something like that. I expect you to act like you have some sense around her. It'll be a stretch, I know, but do try for me." He smiled wider. "Cause you might be growing, but for the moment I'm still bigger than you."
Adair stuck his tongue out at him and Zach rolled his eyes.
The knock at the door sounded and they both looked across the room and then back at each other for a split second. And then the little brat grinned.
Adair moved first, a foot to the seat of the sofa, sprinting over it, and Zach followed suit. Why yes, he was an adult, but his competitive nature won out as they both tried to make it to the door first.
Laughing, he grabbed Adair by the back of his shirt, jerking him back against him as they both skidded to a stop in front of the door.
"Cheater!" Adair accused, as Zach messed his hair up again and reached for the door, one arm around Adair's neck.
"You know it," he said easily, opening the door. He was a bit breathless, and Adair was still grinning and he smiled at Mandy.
"Hey, babe. How are you?" He heard Adair snicker and mutter 'babe' and he squeezed his throat tighter and smiled wider, keeping his eyes on Mandy. "Don't mind him. He'll be wearing a muzzle tonight." He pulled her in and kissed the corner of her mouth, ignoring Adair's gagging noises. Of course, the gagging could be because he tightened his hold on his neck yet again... but really, it was his own fault for being a little shit. "You ready?" he asked her, finally releasing his brother and huffing out a breath as Adair thumped him in his stomach with his elbow.
