The week had gone far too quickly. It was already Friday, and Hermione still needed to make one final list of things to get done tomorrow before dinner as well as decide on the menu because it was a birthday dinner, even if it was a day early, and she wanted it to be different than just a normal meal. So, she had browsed one of the cookbooks in the shop before finding a few things that supposedly went together well and wouldn't be that difficult to make, she hoped ( ... )

As always, the girl looked guarded, but pleasant at the same time. It was an odd sort of alliance, theirs, but talking to Hermione was always interesting.

"Hello," Rita smiled. "Yes. I hope I've not come too early. I thought it might be best if I weren't keeping you away from your customers."

She walked inside at the invitation, glancing about. Perfectly in order, as usual. "Is business going well?"

"Not too early, no," she said. "And it's definitely much easier to speak freely before the shop opens than after. One of my clerks will be here around opening to watch the shop, though, should we need to finish our discussion in my office."

After Rita was inside, she shut the door and smiled. "It's going better than I expected, in all honesty, though I have to admit to having had low expectations so that my budget projections and business plan wouldn't be dependent on numbers that might not have been possible. How are the plans for the Prophet going?"

"Would you like coffee or tea? I've a fresh pot of coffee but could easily make tea if you prefer," she offered as she walked towards the counter to get a pen and parchment so she could take notes regarding the wards, stopping mid-way to find out if Rita wanted anything.

"That's good to hear," she said. "Hopefully people are buying their books here rather than going into Exeter for them. I'm glad people are supporting the local economy, especially with my own business in its early stages. It's going well, yes, if slowly. Mr Davies and his crew have started work on the offices, though, so I'll be able to do more once there is a proper place to work. Coffee would be lovely ( ... )

When Rita said she'd looked Roger over, Hermione arched a brow before she smiled rather smugly. "Yes, he's quite fit," she agreed, drifting for just a second as she thought about how he'd looked that morning with the sheet around his waist. She took a sip of her coffee and focused once again. "He's extremely professional and very good at his job. He can create the most amazing things out of nothing more than a pile of wood."

"I'm afraid that Mr. Filch will have to be seduced by someone else," she mused. "Roger is the only one I've got any intention at all of seducing."

She studied Rita a moment before she asked, "Is the first time painful? I'd imagine it must be, but I'm uncertain what level of pain to expect. I can't imagine that it would be anywhere near as painful as some of the cursed I've been hit with, but it must be worse than a papercut."

Now it was Rita's turn to be surprised. Oh, it wasn't coffee-choking surprise, but she did pause with the mug halfway to her lips, before forcing the hand movement to continue and taking a sip.

Um.

She thought of her own first time, which was - well, considerably different in anatomy to what Hermione was speaking of, and then her other first time, more like the question, which hadn't been terribly painful because of what had come before it.

And how to say it?

"It depends," she replied, "But I think it's safe to say yes, it is painful, although the degree varies." But she wouldn't be satisfied with the yes or no answer, would she, if she'd been reading up on the subject for weeks. Hermione didn't strike Rita as the kind of woman who settled for anything less than the full explanation. "It depends on a number of things - how gentle your partner is, how wet and ready you are, whether you've ever been stretched there before - with fingers, or a vibrator."

Merlin's balls, had she just said all that to Hermione?

Despite the embarrassment of discussing this topic with anyone, much less Rita Skeeter, the part of Hermione that loved to learn took over. That made it a little easier to focus, which was good because Rita had just mentioned being stretch and something about a vibrator.

"Well, Roger's very gentle and patient," she said, rather pleased that she didn't stammer. "And he'd not pressure me if I wasn't, uh, ready. It's the latter part that's a concern. I've not---I mean, fingers, yes, but barely and, right."

"Is it very important to have been," she paused and concentrated on this as if it were a class instead of a semi-awkward conversation, "stretched? I mean, will it be vital before things progress?"

She groaned and ran her hand over her face. "Bloody hell, I'm sorry. I've been reading the books, but it feels like there's information that they omit, and I just want to know, so I'll be prepared," she muttered. "I just...there's no one else to ask, you see, so I've been driving myself crazy with questions about practically versus

Rita chuckled. Just a little at first, but then throatier. She managed to cut it off before it became a full laugh, though, and sipped her coffee again. she wasn't quite sure whether Hermione looked annoyed by it or not, but decided to forestall any offence with an explanation, and possibly offering something of her own.

"I'm sorry. I'm not laughing at your concerns. Really. But of course the books omit things, because books only deal with the black and white. And sex is never as routine as the physics in a book. Merlin, if it was, it would be boring. I don't... well. My first experiences weren't with men, but they certainly weren't gentle, so by the time I did sleep with a man, pain wasn't really an issue. If you haven't had that, then yes, I imagine it will be more painful, but as long as you're relaxed it shouldn't be too bad, and it won't hurt all the time. It's certainly worth the discomfort at first ( ... )

Rita chuckled. "Well, I'm certainly not going to ask you not to tell him. It's completely up to you."

She drained her coffee and looked at her watch. "Merlin, I should probably go before your assistant gets here. I doubt this is a conversation you'd want to continue with an audience."

They said goodbyes in a fashion that was less awkward than it could have been, then Rita found herself wandering up the road, having just given Hermione Granger advice about sex.

Well, surely the day couldn't get any more surreal.
