Since Walter didn’t work on Mondays, it wasn’t until Tuesday afternoon that Eloise had an opportunity to sneak away from work to take a quick trip to the animal shelter. She had been thinking about adopting a pet, hopefully a crup, for weeks, but she was terrible at remembering to do so when she had time. Instead, it occurred to her at the most inopportune times or when the shelter was closed.

This time, though, she’d made a large note and put in the kitchen so she’d not forget again. With Marian gone, the flat was ridiculously quiet and she was already feeling lonely. It was strange how you could go for years on your own but a few months of sharing your space made it difficult to be alone again. Of course, when she’d lived alone, she’d had friends and often went to the pub for dinner or even occasionally a party of some sort or another. Here, in a town full of people she’d known when she was younger, she felt more alone than in a foreign country with strangers.

She was to blame for not owling Luna or Lavender yet, two of the new friends she’d managed to make around the long hours spent at the shop and in the kitchen. It was another thing that she usually remembered at a time when it wasn’t possible to actually sit and write out an owl. Maybe she’d write herself a note about that so she could send out owls over the weekend. She’d love to go shopping with Luna, after all, and looked forward to meeting Lavender for a meal sometime.

It would be nice to make more friends, though. She’d always been social and friendly, which was beneficial when running a business that dealt with the public, but her determination to make the shop successful and her love of cooking had just eaten away more and more hours of her life lately. If she didn’t try to find some balance, she’d end up becoming a crazy woman that had a dozen animals, always smelled like chocolate, and spent all her time alone talking to herself.

She shuddered at that thought before she focused and Apparated to a point near the animal shelter. She hoped there was someone around to help her and that there was a loveable animal of some kind that wanted a home. The main reason she was focused on a crup was because they could eat chocolate without a risk of damage, and she knew not all animals had that ability. In her line of work, she’d prefer not to have to worry about the no-chocolate having rule.

If there weren’t any crups, as they might be rare following the war, she’d settle for whatever liked her and wanted to go home with her. Just one, though, because she didn’t have space for more than that. When she entered the shelter and looked around, she had to remind herself that she could only have one because they all looked so cute and home-needing.
