Cedric still had a Wizarding alarm clock because it was the same one he'd had for the past year and a half before he'd had electricity. It had no problem going off at 6:30. Cedric had more of a problem crawling out of bed. He showered, put on running clothes as he planned to jog back and get a bit of exercise, then Apparated to Socks. He needed coffee before anything.

Ernie was already there, so Cedric joined him. He looked tired but otherwise cheery enough so perhaps whatever the family emergency had been, it had worked out all right. Cedric had wondered, as he knew Ernie wouldn't be happy to go home for something.

Sitting down and asking the elf who appeared for coffee, he smiled. "So how have you been? How's Eleanor now? Have the Aurors caught anybody, or can you tell me that?"

Ernie grinned. "No cracks about beauty sleep, eh?"

He ordered coffee and eggs and toast, wanting to make sure he had sufficient time to eat. "I'm alright. Tired because they have us working fifteen hour days. But alright. Eleanor's doing as well as can be expected with what happened."

As for whether they'd caught anyone, it wasn't common knowledge. So Ernie studiously avoided answering that question. Instead, he raised an eyebrow. "So you and Katie were out investigating on Thursday?"

"We were, along with most of the town, it seemed. She was disappointed, what with the cinema ..." He trailed off, realizing Ernie had been gone and likely didn't know. "She was supposed to open her cinema this weekend. Obviously, that didn't happen."

Cedric didn't miss that Ernie didn't reply that they'd caught anyone, which might have meant they had and he couldn't say. It was a bit ... odd ... knowing there were things Ernie knew that he couldn't tell Cedric. It wasn't that Cedric resented it, just that he was as curious as his cat.

The coffee arrived and Ernie added cream and a lot of sugar. He normally avoided the stuff, but desperate times called for desperate measures. The last thing he needed was to fall asleep on his shift.

"I reckon that it would be difficult to run the cinema without any electricity." Which was unfortunate. He'd been looking forward to taking Eleanor to the cinema. That reminded him...

"Next time you see Katie, can you give her this?" He pulled out his wallet and fished out a slip of paper. "While I was away, I...er...met someone who can help her with concession supplies. He's muggleborn." Which had meant that he was out as a candidate for running the estate, but Ernie had enjoyed talking to him. He handed the paper over to Cedric.

"You did?" Cedric asked, surprised, but also a bit glad to get off the topic of Katie for now, and what that might or might not turn into. He wondered if he should be worried. Ernie and Lisa had a history, if not a good one, but they'd had something long-term in the past to build on, and Ernie and Megan had been friends in school He'd been willing to believe that what Ernie and Lisa had had might have flared back to life, or that Ernie's friendship with Megan might have taken a new turn. Moreover with Megan, Ernie had seemed excited, happy to spend time with her, but he hadn't been talking about falling for her, per se. Maybe some of that had been the fact she was a mother and that complicated things.

But Eleanor ... Ernie hadn't known her at all, as far as Cedric was aware. It was all new. And Ernie wore his heart on his sleeve far more than Cedric. If Cedric might seem more open, Ernie actually was open with his feelings ( ... )

Ernie considered Cedric's words for a long moment. "I understand what you're saying. I do. And the last thing I want is to get my heart trampled on. Again. But...Lisa, even when things were good, I dunno...needed me less than I needed her." He shook his head. "That's not exactly what I mean. It sounds as if I need to be needed. I reckon I do. But Lisa...kept me at arms' length to a certain extent. Especially this last time.

"And Megan and I are friends. But there was a lot we didn't--that we still don't really--know about each other." This wasn't about justifying himself to Cedric any longer, but more about working things out for himself ( ... )

"We tell different people different things," Cedric said. "Nobody can be everything to a person. I'm not sure that's even healthy. But it is important to feel there's somebody you can tell most everything to, including things you can't tell even close friends. That's a good sign." He nodded, smiling at the rest of Ernie's defense ( ... )

He knew Cedric well enough to know that he wanted to say more. Ernie appreciated the fact that he was restraining himself. "Fair enough," he said, nodding. "And, at least I haven't jumped into bed with Eleanor yet. Well, not in the figurative sense. Puts me ahead of my last two...whatevers."

He glanced at his watch, noting that he needed to leave shortly and signaling for the check. He'd stuffed a pair of his socks into his jacket pocket before he'd left this morning. Hopefully, the elves wouldn't be put off that they were dirty.
