"You did?" Cedric asked, surprised, but also a bit glad to get off the topic of Katie for now, and what that might or might not turn into. He wondered if he should be worried. Ernie and Lisa had a history, if not a good one, but they'd had something long-term in the past to build on, and Ernie and Megan had been friends in school He'd been willing to believe that what Ernie and Lisa had had might have flared back to life, or that Ernie's friendship with Megan might have taken a new turn. Moreover with Megan, Ernie had seemed excited, happy to spend time with her, but he hadn't been talking about falling for her, per se. Maybe some of that had been the fact she was a mother and that complicated things.

But Eleanor ... Ernie hadn't known her at all, as far as Cedric was aware. It was all new. And Ernie wore his heart on his sleeve far more than Cedric. If Cedric might seem more open, Ernie actually was open with his feelings ( ... )

Ernie considered Cedric's words for a long moment. "I understand what you're saying. I do. And the last thing I want is to get my heart trampled on. Again. But...Lisa, even when things were good, I dunno...needed me less than I needed her." He shook his head. "That's not exactly what I mean. It sounds as if I need to be needed. I reckon I do. But Lisa...kept me at arms' length to a certain extent. Especially this last time.

"And Megan and I are friends. But there was a lot we didn't--that we still don't really--know about each other." This wasn't about justifying himself to Cedric any longer, but more about working things out for himself ( ... )

"We tell different people different things," Cedric said. "Nobody can be everything to a person. I'm not sure that's even healthy. But it is important to feel there's somebody you can tell most everything to, including things you can't tell even close friends. That's a good sign." He nodded, smiling at the rest of Ernie's defense ( ... )

He knew Cedric well enough to know that he wanted to say more. Ernie appreciated the fact that he was restraining himself. "Fair enough," he said, nodding. "And, at least I haven't jumped into bed with Eleanor yet. Well, not in the figurative sense. Puts me ahead of my last two...whatevers."

He glanced at his watch, noting that he needed to leave shortly and signaling for the check. He'd stuffed a pair of his socks into his jacket pocket before he'd left this morning. Hopefully, the elves wouldn't be put off that they were dirty.

Cedric chuckled. "It's not the jumping into bed I'm worried about as long as the other party's amenable. And I do hope everything works out this time. The fact it feels different, that you can talk to her and she can talk to you ... I think that's important."

He didn't have much for the elves this time, but he'd only wanted a coffee. Taking a page from Rabastan, he'd decided to bring a toy instead of a sock. When the elf returned, he grinned and offered her a glitter dotted high-jump ball but he'd charmed it to glow briefly each time it bounced. She seemed delighted with the toy, delighted enough she didn't mind that he didn't have clothes.

"Let me know how things are going," he told Ernie. "I'm actually going to go and jog. I've got out of the habit and feel a need for a bit more exercise." He shook Ernie's hand. "I know she doesn't really know me, but tell Eleanor I said 'hullo' and I hope her house gets repaired quickly."
