Wednesdays were almost like a day of calm. Since Hermione had to run the shop alone, she usually had a rather quiet day. There wasn't a list of two dozen things that she just had to get done before dinner and there wasn't any time for meetings or focusing on the press. Instead, she used the day for inventory and paperwork, as well as merchandising and answering any owl requests she had still to fill ( ... )

Jeff chuckled. "I see you've got him figured out. I expect he's hiding from me. If he doesn't have something to do, he wanders off looking for something. A bored Diggory is a dangerous object."

He'd been glancing around while he spoke. The place was empty.

"I don't think anyone could ever truly figure Cedric out, but we've been friends for a few months, so I know him relatively well. I was mostly going based on what I'd do if I were in the same circumstances," she said with a smile.

"I'd suggest that you check the kitchen, but you came that way, so I'm assuming he wasn't taking over the floor or having a cup of tea." She frowned thoughtfully and tried to think where he might go.

If Jeff hadn't come up here to talk to Hermione, he wasn't above taking advantage of a situation, and he'd been wanting to ask her a couple of questions anyway -- not all about Cedric.

He leaned up against a shelf, arms crossed loosely. "Cedric ain't that complicated, although he can seem like it with the 99 things he keeps in the air at once. And yeah, he wasn't in the kitchen. I'm hoping he's just sitting out somewhere, reading his papers -- though it's a little rainy. Man, doesn't the sun ever shine in this country?"

"I think he's more complicated than he leads people to believe," she mused. "He seems quite simple, not in a negative way, but there are many layers to him that people don't seem to notice too often. I suppose that's one of the reasons that we get along."

"It does shine quite a lot. You just need to be alert enough to enjoy those many moments during the day, in between the clouds and the rain," she said with a smile. "It's really not that bad right now. October and November are far worse in terms of rainfall."

Jeff shook his head. "I should be used to it. Toronto's not really all that much better."

He was quiet a moment, composing thoughts and watching Hermione work. "There are layers to Cedric because he thinks about things," he said finally. "He knows that life's not black-and-white, which sounds obvious, but more people say they understand that than do. He sees so many possibilities, and weighs people's feelings so much, he has a hard time cutting to the chase. Me, I'm a little more blunt.

"You're dating two guys, Hermione. They both seem decent sorts, and I know at least one of 'em's so crazy about you he can't see straight. And I know you were pretty damn worried about him when he was sick." Jeff kept to himself his observations about Cedric and Hermione's body language when they were together, but he'd been watching, and was disquieted. "Can't speak to the feelings of Roger. But where are you in all of it? And yeah, I've heard Cedric's take -- several times. I want to hear yours ( ... )

She sorted through newly printed titles while Jeff stood around. She wasn't sure if he was browsing or thinking, but she didn't see a need to rush him since the shop was quiet. When he spoke about Cedric, she listened as she continued working ( ... )

Jeff was more amused than offended. He'd fully intended to stir the pot. Cedric liked to keep things on an even keel too much. He had serious issues with people being angry at him. Jeff didn't care. It was something one got used to, as a native person in a largely white world ( ... )

Why did this annoying man have to choose today of all days to have a heart to heart talk? If Eleanor was there, Hermione could make excuses and just leave. She really wasn't ready to start having a big think over the situation, even if she knew it would soon be time to make such decisions ( ... )

"Wounds heal, Hermione." She might be insisting on using his last name, but he wasn't. She wanted distance because he was pushing her; he wasn't inclined to allow the distance. "One of 'em will limp for a while, but he'll get over it. You go through life, you get bumps and bruises. It's inevitable ( ... )
