"I'm running out of socks," he'd told Miffy. "And until I get settled, I'm afraid this is all I've got."

He'd produced the pound notes, knowing they were probably useless, but unable to not offer something. Anything.

She'd looked up at him with those watery eyes and blushed harder than he'd seen her do yet, and he'd felt relieved and worried at the same time. Surely they needed supplies or something, and he'd promised himself he'd return the favour any way he could, once he'd gotten settled. Even if it meant bringing a trunkload of cabbages from a nearby Muggle town.

Fifteen minutes later, he was headed down Beta Street with a sackful of food. Two huge containers of beef stew, an entire loaf of fresh bread, and the most amazing hand-carved wooden eating utensils he'd ever seen.

There might have also been an unopened bottle of Scotch whiskey in the messenger bag he'd taken to wearing around town.

Beta Street was all the information he'd been given, but when he saw the old Spanish mission-style building, he knew he was in the right place. Even before he noticed Professor McGonagall sitting just outside the front door, reading, he knew it.

It was the most McGonagall-ish building he'd ever seen in his life. Stark white, no-nonsense façade that somehow said both 'Come in!' and 'Tread carefully here'. Ornate black iron window casings that said 'Don't dare to think I don't have a feminine side.' Mish-mashed stone wall along the front that said, 'You're on higher ground here' and 'Higher ground is made of many different variables working together'.

"Good to know some things never change," he shouted in greeting, a head-splitting grin crossing his face.
