"Well then, your wish is my command, my Princess." He kissed his little lady on the cheek, then stopped before setting her down. Julian didn't think there would be much trouble with unveiling his gift, but he wasn't certain if Ella had ever encountered one of these things before. She was bold in a way that he admired, but he wasn't sure what things scared her. Pirates didn't seem to do the trick, at least. With a smirk to that thought, he snuggled Ella closer to him ( ... )

Ella looked on with wide eyes as the house elf came inside. She'd only ever seen house elves in Socks before and now her Daddy was going to have one of his own.

She wondered if Mummy would give her a house elf.

Sighing and barely suppressing an eye roll at the elf's insistence on his title of 'master', Julian supplied, "I know how hard you've been working, love. You've been here more days than out. So I thought if you had a tailor's assistant, it would ease your stress some. I've interviewed Knobby, and she knows the basics of sewing as well as the domestic duties. She's... new to service, but she's eager to learn. I'm sure that with some supplemental lessons, she'll make a great seamstress for you. She's yours to command, at any rate." He sighed again as he felt a small, desperate tug at his leg. Now he knew how a parent felt the first day of school.

When he heard Gilderoy's command, Julian began to protest. He wasn't quick enough, however, and Knobby sniffled, then began wailing.

"OOOOoooohhhh poooor Knooobbbbby! Other master doesn't want Knoooobbby eiiittheeerrrr! Knoobbby's such a bad elffff!!" She began pulling violently on her ears, then somehow managed to wrap herself around Julian's leg and chew on her ear at the same ( ... )

It was impossible not to giggle when the house elf was being so silly, and Ella giggled hard, wrapping her arms around her tummy as it nearly hurted.

'Knobby funny!' she declared, walking up and pulling the elf's big ear to see if it was her real ear. She'd always wondered when she saw the elves at Socks, but she'd never dared to try and see if it was lose or not.

It wasn't. And the elf wailed louder.

'I didn't pull hard, Daddy,' Ella said quickly, looking up at both her daddies with big innocent eyes.

"We know, love. Knobby's just a bit... sensitive right now." More like neurotic, but that was a bit above Ella's head. A thought came to Julian however, and as much as he disliked encouraging the elf's delusions, it would at least temper his headache some. As gently as his patient would allow, he pried Knobby off his leg as he said in his most soothing voice, "Princess Wiggles, I believe I have a most urgent job for you. It requires your remarkable talents. Knobby is to live and work here, but she doesn't know the shop as well as you. Would you please be her guide and show her about the place?

"And Knobby?" He waited until the elf quieted - which didn't take very long as she seemed to think he was giving a command - to continue. "Miss Ella here will show you about the shop, so that you may serve Master Lockhart much better." When the elf began to protest again, he stopped that business right in its tracks. "Don't worry, I'll make sure he doesn't give you clothing. For now, he's still your master ( ... )

"I... what?... yes? Um... sure. I don't--"

Gilderoy wasn't entirely sure what was going on, but apparently he did something terribly wrong. "I don't know what just happened," he said, completely confused. "I just want her to be happy. Happy workers are efficient workers."

"I, um... thank you, darling," Gilderoy said, sinking back into his chair. "I've never been around house elves before - well, besides the few who were at St. Mungo's and the ones at Socks. I just want to make her happy, and the ones at socks are happy when they have nice clothes."

He couldn't seem to stop sighing today. Julian did it again, then walked over to his lover to kneel down between his legs. Nuzzling gently against his cheek, he replied, "I know, love. House elves, however, don't think the same way as humans. The ones at St. Mungos were beholden to the hospital, so they probably were quite content with their work as it was. Also, it has to be the elf's master that gives them clothes, in order to free them. For a facility such as that, I would imagine the acting director would be considered the master.

"As for Socks... well, those are freed elves, Gilden. They work under their own authority and like it. It's a peculiar mentality amongst house elves, one on the rise but not necessarily welcomed or shared with all elves. A typical house elf doesn't quite feel at home without someone in their care. There's several unbound house elves in town who are looking for masters. I was nearly trampled when I made my pick ( ... )

It was hard to imagine such a creature. All of the house elves he'd met before seemed to be so professional. Knobby was so vastly different from any of them. "I'll do my best with her," Gilderoy said. He still wasn't sure he could go very long without giving her some clothes, but maybe there were other things he could do.

"Can I give her a pillow and a blanket? What about toys? Can I make toys for her to play wtih? Do you think she'd play a game with me if I wanted her to?" He might just be able to get over the whole clothes thing if he could shower her with other kinds of gifts of affection.

"I love her, darling. I love that you'd think of bringing here for me, and I love you for being so considerate"

He was starting to wonder if he should have just pulled a vagrant off the streets. Gilderoy may be less inclined to think of them as a toy and more as a worker then.

"I'm sure she'd appreciate a pillow and a blanket, but she's not a pet, love. She'll... play with you, if that's what you need." Great Minerva give him strength against all these horrid mental images. "But she doesn't require games, toys, or coddling of any sort. She's a worker, it's what she does and what she enjoys doing most. See how pleased she was when you asked her to cook? And see how she perks up when you give a command? That's what house elves like best, being given something to do ( ... )
