"As for Socks... well, those are freed elves, Gilden. They work under their own authority and like it. It's a peculiar mentality amongst house elves, one on the rise but not necessarily welcomed or shared with all elves. A typical house elf doesn't quite feel at home without someone in their care. There's several unbound house elves in town who are looking for masters. I was nearly trampled when I made my pick.
"So you see, not every elf feels the same way about clothing as the Socks elves do. I'm sure if she could see it that way, Knobby would be touched by the offer. But any clothing you give her will free her from your service. And as you can tell, she's very much a traditional house elf." Lords, did he know it. "Now I gave her that spruced up doily because it was pretty. You had done a lovely job of crocheting it, darling. Also, it's a sign of her station and allegiance. She doesn't want to look like a walking doll. She wants to sew for you, cook and clean if needed. She wants to take care of you."

"Can I give her a pillow and a blanket? What about toys? Can I make toys for her to play wtih? Do you think she'd play a game with me if I wanted her to?" He might just be able to get over the whole clothes thing if he could shower her with other kinds of gifts of affection.
"I love her, darling. I love that you'd think of bringing here for me, and I love you for being so considerate"

"I'm sure she'd appreciate a pillow and a blanket, but she's not a pet, love. She'll... play with you, if that's what you need." Great Minerva give him strength against all these horrid mental images. "But she doesn't require games, toys, or coddling of any sort. She's a worker, it's what she does and what she enjoys doing most. See how pleased she was when you asked her to cook? And see how she perks up when you give a command? That's what house elves like best, being given something to do."
He was about to give up, as Gilderoy, typically enough, wasn't really listening to him. His thanks warmed Julian a bit though, making some of the day's stress a little more worthwhile. What would please him most, however, would be for Gilderoy to just accept the help for what it was, and relax a bit more. That's all Julian had wanted, to see his Goldleaf comfortable and happy again.
Wasn't that what this Christmas Spirit stuff was all about anyway?
"I do hope she works out for you, love. Despite her... willfulness, she's completely yours. Season's greetings, darling. I love you too." He kissed his Goldleaf before rising again.
