When Cedric had bought little presents for the children at Lockhart's party, he'd remembered Viktor's daughter too. He didn't know that Viktor wouldn't be there, but Lockhart hadn't mentioned him, and really had no way of knowing him, so Cedric assumed not. He'd been sure to get something for Maire. While he supposed Viktor would see that she had a proper Christmas, Cedric wanted to get her something. He hadn't seen Viktor since the Quidditch insanity, either, despite the fact they lived fairly closely. It was time to remedy that.

Cedric hadn't been sure what to get Viktor, if anything. He'd done a little research on Bulgarian Christmas traditions to see what Viktor might know, but had decided trying to dress up in costume and sing health to Viktor would probably result in Viktor running for ear plugs -- so that was right out. The rest of it seemed family or religious-related, and Cedric had no idea if wizards in Bulgaria participated in the Orthodox Church, or stayed mostly apart from Christianity, as in England.

Then he stumbled across the idea of a round Christmas loaf: a kolak. Cedric was no baker himself, so he'd called bakeries in Exeter until he found one that had something close enough. (Exeter wasn't exactly overrun by Bulgarians or Greeks or other Balkans peoples, so nobody knew what a kolak was. 'Round sweet bread with a hole in the middle,' however, got a better response.) He'd picked it up the day before, along with Maire's present, and now took the little Victorian doll, the box of Christmas crackers and the loaf up to Viktor's house. Once again, he wished the village had telephones or a Floo, to alert them he was coming, and make sure they were home. He didn't even know whether Viktor might have gone back to Bulgaria already, or if he planned to do so. He'd said he had siblings.

Cedric knocked on the door.
