Today was going to be a bad day. Hermione had known from the moment she'd finally rolled out of bed, shortly after two, that it was one of those days that she should just go back to bed and hide under the covers. She was tired, but it was more physical than mental. Her back and arms were sore, her legs ached, her ribs were killing her, and her left hand kept clenching without her even realizing it at first. There was also the cough, which was, thankfully, sporadic, and the sneezing, which was, unfortunately, not ( ... )

"Er. Hullo, Hermione." He smiled at her as she opened the door, but he felt it falter a bit when he got a good look at her. Her greeting was friendly; she wasn't even holding her wand this time. But she seemed exhausted as she stepped back to let him in. And maybe a bit of a cold, if the tone of her voice was any indication.

Roger walked inside, pausing briefly in the foyer. "Good to see you. I,ah... brought scones. They're still hot, I think." He hoped. Although Hermione didn't seem to have much of an appetite.

As they made their way back toward the kitchen, he placed the box on the table. "Erm. I don't mean to be presumptuous but, why don't you sit? If you point me in the right direction, I could make the coffee. Or tea, if you'd rather."

"You didn't have to bring anything," she told him. "Though, I'm glad you did as I've not had time to get anything fresh lately. They smell lovely."

When they reached the kitchen, she wrinkled her nose and counted to five to keep from sneezing. Stupid bloody cold. Her nose was beginning to look like the reindeer on the telly with the blinking red nose.

She turned to look at Roger but, before she could tell him that he was a guest and that meant she'd make the coffee, she was hit with a coughing fit. She turned away and covered her mouth, giving in to the urge to sneeze. She summoned her box of tissues and blew her nose before tossing the tissue in the bin. She washed her hands and looked at him with a wry smile.

"I've caught a cold," she admitted reluctantly. "Been walking in the rain too much, I suppose, but it feels nice falling on my face, so I guess it's a fair trade, right? If you don't think me a horrid host, I think I'll accept that offer. Coffee's in the tin there, or there's a few tins of tea in the cabinet there."

He hesitated, watching her try to fend off her sneeze and wondering if he'd been hasty. She didn't know him well at all, and here he was offering to rummage around in her kitchen for her. Before he could backtrack, though, Hermione lost her valiant struggle and let out a huge sneeze, which segued nicely into a rapid succession of coughs. "Er, bless you," he told her.

Still on his feet, Roger looked around for some tissues, only to have a box of them float over his shoulder as Hermione summoned them herself. Feeling useless now, he chuckled.

"The rain is pretty relaxing," he commented. "The sounds. And I think it makes things seem a bit sharper, more vivid, to look at. But the cold? Definitely a downside," he added, turning and opening the cabinet she indicated.

Remembering that he should probably put the water on first, he lifted the kettle. Finding it full, he set it back down and switched on the burner.

"So," he began, fishing out tea bags and mugs, "How are the plans for the shop going?"

"That's not crazy. Not at all." Leaning forward in his seat, he placed his elbows on the table and ran a finger idly around the edge of the little saucer under his tea. "I think...I think maybe that's what it is to be really happy," he said finally. "It's knowing who we are individually that helps us to connect with others on a level that's comfortable, and mutually satisfying. We have to know what we want, and we'll not know that unless we know ourselves. And of course, I guess after so much time and so much...everything else, it's really about getting to know ourselves, and each other, again. Preconceptions about who we were have no place in the here and now, if we're to move forward." He sat back, a little surprised, but not unpleasantly, that he'd talked so much. It had been a while.

"Well, good to know." He put on a relieved expression before looking across at her with mock-dubiousness. "No offense, Granger. But you don't strike me as remotely scary," he joked. It wasn't totally true, though. Those wards had been wicked ( ... )
