Zacharias leaned against the railings of his balcony and looked out, watching as the leaves fell to the ground in a bed under the trees. His broom was propped up at the corner, collecting dust and leaves and bugs, but he honestly couldn’t be bothered to put it in his already dusty apartment.

He really had to go get his wand checked up.

He glanced behind his shoulder, however, when he heard the pounding of the door. Frowning, he pushed himself away from the balcony, and peeked out the peep hole to see a flash of blond hair, but no face, no other indication to see who it was. Tentatively, he opened the door a crack, and blinked at a familiar sight.

“Surprise!” Adair, his ten-year-old brother, opened his arms wide and far and smirked at Zacharias, who still stood there in the doorway, blinking.

Adair was smaller, but it looked like he would soon be at Zach’s height and weight. His hair was blonder, and his frame was slightly lankier, but that’s how Zach grew up too.

“What’re you doing here, eh?” Zach pulled him in by the scruff of his neck, laughing when Adair struggled and nearly dropped his luggage on Zach’s foot. Adair struggled away from the hug Zach wanted to give, and both of them grinned at each other, red faced and flushing, when they pulled apart completely. Zach moved past him and closed the door when Adair started talking.

“I told Mum that you wanted me here, and you said you did, so I came. Hey.” Adair paused, and looked around. “It smells in here.”

Zacharias rolled his eyes. “Maybe it’s your upper lip,” he muttered. He took Adair’s bag and slung his arm around his shoulder, bringing him to his bedroom. There, he dumped the bag on the floor and sat on his bed, watching as his brother observed and looked around his room curiously.

“How long did Mum say you could stay?” Zach asked.

“Until Tuesday.” Adair plopped on the floor and started unbuckling his shoes. Zach watched him without a word, and then remembered that Terry and him were supposed to look at furniture.

Ha. Terry and I.

“ZACH-A-RI-AS!” Zach looked up when he heard Adair yelling at him. Adair smiled and wiggled his feet near Zach’s face.

“Have you talked to Ada?”

Zacharias shook his head. “No, I haven’t. Have you?”

Adair nodded and took off his socks. He splayed his toes wide, wiggling them, before taking off his jacket and his hat. “Yeah, she came over yesterday with Peter and!” Adair’s eyes widened, “Did you get an owl? She’s pregnant!”

“Pregnant?” Zacharias slid to the floor, his back against the bed. His eyebrows lifted.

“Yeah!” Adair grinned. “Mum’s been talking about you too.”

“Oh?” Zacharias drawled. “What about?”

“You know…” Adair trailed off slyly, and they caught each other’s eyes and Zach glanced away quickly.

“Well, you tell Mum that if she finds someone for me, then have them owl.” Zach didn’t like the way Adair was looking at him - all sly and quiet, as if he knew something that Zach had never said.

“Sureeee,” Adair muttered, continuing to grin. Zacharias felt a little uneasy under that smile, and didn’t glance away when Adair kept his eyes. They looked at each other before Adair smirked.

“Adabelle told me something.” He said quietly.

Zacharias’ insides froze. “Yeah, like what?” He said idly, playing with the carpet.

“Like I’m gonna tell you!” Adair pushed himself up. Zacharias glanced up at him.

“C’mon, make me something to eat.” Adair walked out of the kitchen, and Zacharias blinked at the sudden change of attitude. Did Adair know? Adabelle knew for sure, even if he never told her. He didn’t like telling people; he never knew what to say or how to bring it up, mostly.

With a small sigh, he pushed himself up, and wondered what he was going to do with his siblings.
