Her first sign came two months previously. She had been tailing Ari on one of his contacts, an American got involved, and Ari actually stooped so low as to start a hexing contest with the man. She took it upon herself to knock them both unconscious before they could do lasting harm to themselves or each other, got Ari to a relatively safe spot, and left him to wake up on his own.
She asked him, when he came around, what he had been thinking; from what she saw, the fight was far from Ari’s last resort, and he knew better than to provoke something like that. But he always was good with words, and she wanted to believe him.
She wanted to believe he was not as far gone as that hexing contest would have said on its own. She wanted to believe she would still have her brother, and so she did.
But now, she cannot believe it. It hurts more than she cares to admit, knowing that she had lost him long before she had to kill him.
