My Happiest Moment as a Fannish Jew (Jewish Fan?)

Jul 30, 2008 16:44

My squee for this was more intense than my squee for just about anything ever, and I wasn't even properly in fandom yet.

When it aired, the Sports Night episode April Is The Cruelest Month made my heart absolutely explode with joy, for the following reasons ( Read more... )

My happiest Jewish fannish moment was the House episode with the Chasidic wedding. I felt that the show did a fabulous job of showing the *range* of Jews, from the secular Taub to the guest stars, while treating all of them with some sympathy.

Also, as npkedit notes, House isn't Jewish, but he seems to know more about Judaism than a lot of Jews :D

I loved it!

It might have been the fact that my Jewish wedding was right after that but I cried during the opening scene of that and then when she insisted on having Shabbat with her husband. CRIED.

I had stopped watching House before that episode aired, but I heard about how wonderful it was. House's moments of being a Judaic-savant are happymaking things indeed. *g*

I loved that moment so very much - I think we were shouting when he did it properly.

I also loved that, yes, they did a skit about Moses and the Passover story, but they did it *before* the seder actually began, not in place of it. Plus did you notice the haggadot? They were very distinctive - red and gold, the same ones my husband's famiy have used since they had two boys in yeshiva. It may have been in the middle of a workday (although, given how late their hours are, it may well have been at night) but they got the important things right.

Other favorite Jewish moments? There was a Sharon Gless series right after Cagney and Lacey finished its run - The Trials of Rosie O'Neill, which lasted less than a year. Her *boss*in the public defenders office wore a crocheted kippah, and disappeared early on Fridays. He invited her to a Shabbat dinner, and he, too, said kiddush correctly ( ... )

Awww...that story about Sharon Gless' sheva brachot is really sweet - and it kind of cracks me up that TV Guide was confused about it.

What I liked about Molina's recital of the kaddish was that the only ones of us who would know that technically Jeremy did it wrong would appreciate that.

I know! It was like the ultimate Jew-geek inside joke! And it was on a prime-time network sitcom. *is still both boggled and gleeful*

Right, so, I'm a secular jew from Israel, and I've never heard Adoshem used? Is that like a combination of Adonai and Hashem?

My first moment of fannish glee at jewishness was probably... the time when Toby from the west wing was called into a meeting on Friday and (Josh?) had to get him from the (beautiful) synagogue he was in. It was such a nonchalant detail. I actually have no idea whether we had indication before on the show that Toby was Jewish, possibly I just wasn't paying attention, but that moment was kind of a "hey... OMG!" sort of thing for me.

Toby and Josh and Bartlett vs. Mary Marsh in the West Wing pilot was probably my favorite Jewish moment, on TWW at least. Mary Marsh says she doesn't appreciate Josh's "New York sense of humor." Josh starts correcting her about being from Connecticut, when Toby interrupts, and says "She meant Jewish. When she said New York sense of humor, she was talking about you and me."

Full clip here, even though the rest of the clip really bugs me, when Toby corrects the reverend by saying the third commandment is "Honor thy father...". Um, not in any Bibles I was raised on.

Two of my favorite Jewish moments are on Friends, when Ross tries teaching his son about Hannukah using a Santa-like "Holiday Armadillo", and The OC episodes with the invented Chrismukkah.

Hmm... there must be more. I will ponder.

Hehe, I've seen that ep, but I've seen most of the first season of WW out of order, so I didn't know it was the pilot. Thanks for the clip :D

and LMAO about that commandment thing, I never noticed, you're right!

You know, I'm usually so clueless about Jews in media, I'm still not actually sure whether Ross and Monica were jewish - I mean, Geller, right? On the other hand, they never realyl mentioned it?

I've heard of the Chrimukkah (Christmukkah?) thing and I actually think it sounds awesome, but I've never seen the OC.

...is it weird that whenever I think "favourite moment of jews on TV" I think of one of your fics and then have to remind myself that no, that did not actually happen on screen?

Am I the only person who really dislikes the term "Chrismukkah"?

That ep of SN is one of my favorite things, too. I wrote a long post about it after I first watched it, with great glee.
