I should probably wait until I've collected my thoughts before I write more about the film, but before I forget I want to put down some Bible passages that I was reminded of as I watched it last night. Many of the concepts that were discussed, for example greed, strongly reflected things I've been learning from the Bible in the past year. (The film has overtaken my brain -- last night I dreamt that I passed by Donald Trump as he was entering
Anna Maria Tremonti's office for an interview, unescorted. The first thing I thought was "Where are his bodyguards? Awesome, I can punch Donald Trump's face in RIGHT NOW if I want to!")
So, one question I've been thinking about: Is it moral to work for a company whose bottom line is to maximize profit?
The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the waters.
- Psalm 24:1-2
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.
- Proverbs 31:8-9
Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed-
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors-
and they have no comforter.
And I declared that the dead,
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.
But better than both
is he who has not yet been,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.
And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
- Ecclesiastes 4:1-4
"Everything is permissible" -- but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible" -- but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.
- 1 Corinthians 10: 23-24
"Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." - Jesus
