Characters/Pairing: Spike(Spike/Buffy implied)

What was the big deal about Valentine's Day anyway? Once a year a man tried to prove his love by giving the best, most romantic gift he could find. Spike shrugged his shoulders as he dug into the contents of the crate in front of him before he quickly pushed it away. He just didn't get it! Angelus had had no trouble finding the perfect gift for Dru, a human heart. She had been thrilled beyond measure at her sire's gift but had barely managed a smile for the necklace he had gotten for her. Maybe, he should.... Although he was pretty sure that Buffy wouldn't appreciate that kind of poetry. She'd probably stake him on the spot.

His bad mood worsened as he began to pull the boxes off the shelves behind him. He'd been in the abandoned store for hours now and had yet to find anything worth finding. Unless one was interested in garishly painted unicorns or carousel horses and unfortunately they weren't the sort of thing the slayer liked. A loud, aggravated sigh escaped him. This wasn't exactly the way he'd envisioned spending his night. But it wasn't as if his dreams would come true anyway. He wasn't an idiot. He knew that despite the fact she treated him like a man; she still thought of him as a monster. But even a monster should be able to try. Right?

He gave a particularly nasty kick to the shelves beside him and quickly dived out of the way as a large, bent box fell from the top shelf. Spike waited as the box fell to the floor, ready for the sound of porcelain breaking to echo through the store. But the sound never came. Curiosity got the better of him as he leaned down to open the box.

Bits of colorful paper filled the box to the brim. Even though he reached out immediately to pick one up, it took him a moment to realize what he was looking at. Old Valentine's Day cards. A whole box full of them. Most were in practically mint condition, except maybe for a little yellowing around the edges on some of them.

For a few moments Spike searched through the cards before he finally, pulled one out of the box. A pair of matches and the words 'Let's Strike Up A Match, Valentine!' were on a white background.

This was it, the perfect card for her! How could it not be? It fit their relationship perfectly. For what else would a vampire and a slayer be but two flames of passion waiting for the match to be struck?
