In Plain Sight
Talbot looked across the sumptuous table at Angel and Spike and smiled sweetly.
“I think you will like this,” he purred. “Blood sorbet is such a wonderful dessert to finish off such a fine meal, don’t you think?”
“It’s one of Talbot’s own recipes,” King Russell drawled as he took his consort’s hand and squeezed it gently.
Angel looked at the red slush that filled the golden bowl in front of him. It had taken all of his will power not to dust the two vampires sitting on opposite sides of the table when he and Spike had first met them but Buffy was missing and Russell had professed to know where she was.
“Your Majesty, with all due respect,” Angel said softly, trying not to let his anger show through. “We came here at your insistence because you claimed to know where we could find Buffy Summers. I’m sure you can appreciate that we would like to be on our way before dawn.
“In due time, my friend,” Russell chuckled. “We can retire to the drawing room when we’ve finished eating and you’ll have the information you came here for.”
Spike had already finished his sorbet and was getting antsy. He was just as concerned as Angel was about Buffy but he knew from experience that whoever held the upper hand had the power and there wasn’t much you could do about it.
Russell smiled to himself as he felt Angel’s animosity toward him and Spike’s craving to be anywhere else than where he was right now. He had heard about the two vampires with a soul and the thought of having them under his wing would be a major victory in his quest to unite the vampire clans and expand his kingdom.
When he was finally bored with having a one-sided conversation with Talbot while Angel stewed and Spike fidgeted, he decided to declare dinner over.
“Shall we retire to the drawing room, gentlemen?” he said cheerfully. “I am at your service.”
Little did Angel and Spike know that Russell had no intention of telling them that Buffy wasn’t very far away, almost under their noses, concealed in a hidden room a few doors down. With such leverage, he was sure that there would be no resistance from the two vampires to join him.
With a knowing smile, Talbot closed the door behind them.
Long live the king.
