this picture. Prompt: Fluff. Seeing the above picture of Shatner and Nimoy prompts a nervous Chris to ask Zach, "Will you still love me when I'm old and grey and fat?"
And Zach replies, very wordily, that of course he will. Yeah, I'm easily pleased
Except I, you know, threw all my ridiculous all over it.
That picture plagued Chris. Every time he saw it he could feel insecurity slide up his spine and take hold over his body. He didn't want to believe it but Zach never said anything about it. They don't talk about the long run. They don't talk about ten, twenty years in the future so Chris' mind takes a hold of him. His mind runs away with images of Zach with younger men as they grow old. Zach being the new Hugh Hefner even though Zach is a hell of a lot classier than Hef. He knows he's being ridiculous but he's never admitted he wasn't ridiculous.
One day they're just sitting together in a room that is not a chartroom or a web chat room. They are on a couch, their skin is touching and this is the best feeling that Chris has felt in months. Zach is a corporeal force that is weighing down on his side. His smile is bright and his eyes brighter but Chris' mind is spinning stories of a far off time when Chris is fat and old and Zach will be smiling that earth shattering smile at someone else.
Zach touches his side to get Chris' attention and Chris notices that his smile has turned into concern. "You okay?"
Chris shrugs. What a stupid thing to ask but he just needs to know. "So you know, uh, that picture?"
Zach rolls his eyes and the smile is back on his face a little bit. "I know many pictures, Chris. A certain one you're talking about?"
Chris looks away. Fuck this is embarrassing. "You know the one of Leonard and Shatner. Like hugging? And being all...adorable."
Zach is trying to suppress his smile and it shouldn't be as endearing as it is. But everything Zach does is endearing.
"Isn't that like every picture of them?"
Chris shrugs because yeah pretty much. "I just. Will you still love me like that when I'm old and grey and fat?" He blurts out. He blinks and avoids eye contact with Zach again. "I...didn't mean to say that out loud."
Zach's smiling again and he needs to understand that Chris is freaking out over here. Chris is freaking out and Zach isn't making this easier. He just wants to be swallowed into the couch.
"At least you're admitting that you know you're going to get fat. That's a good first step."
Chris rolls his eyes and looks back at the television that neither of them has noticed until now. He doesn't know what they're watching but whatever it is, it's better than looking at Zach right now.
No matter how much Chris has missed his stupid face.
Suddenly Zach is reaching up for Chris' face and he's on his knees in front of Chris. "Hey look at me. Chris you know I love you. You know that. You know I love you, I've always loved you and I probably will as long as you don't lose your hair."
Chris groans and tries to look away but Zach won't let him. His eyes are full of mirth and Chris doesn't know where he's going with this but Chris is happy. Just here with Zach who is professing his love in the weirdest way. Because of Chris' own insecurities. "Yeah," he croaks out because he knows Zach loves him. As much as Chris loves Zach himself.
"You're 38 and you look it."
Now Chris is confused. "Zach I'm not even 31."
"Right. And next year you’re 39, and then 40. And after 40 you may as well die."
Chris' eyes bulge out of his head and fuck no. "Zach if you quote that fucking movie at me we are done. Done forever."
Zach doesn't let up and leans up to kiss Chris' face. His lips, then his cheekbones, then his eyes. "If anyone decides that you are too old and decrepit and ugly to be at all lovable, I am available to tolerate to love you in your golden years."
Chris takes a deep breath and exhales. "I hate you so much right now."
Zach takes Chris' wrist in his hands and kisses it so softly that Chris forces himself to open his eyes. "No I won't still love you when you're old and grey and fat and hairless."
Chris frowns because this sudden turn of conversation has turned to the worst. Before he freaks out Zach is up and straddling his hips. "I will always love you. When you're arguing with the young folk in the nursing home I will be there to laugh. When you talk about the "good ole days" I will be there loving you in the "bad old days". I will be there when you don't remember me. And everytime you doubt me I want you to remember that."
Chris smiles and kisses Zach, all insecurities thrown out of his body because of the man on top of him. The man who is heavier than he looks.
"I love you Zach. I love you so much but if you don't get off I'm going to become paralyzed and I'll be in a wheelchair sooner than I'd like."
Zach rolled his eyes and moved off him but let his legs lay on Chris' own and this is perfection.
