We just spent a wonderful morning with three ultra cool people, my cousin Paul and his girlfriend Laura, and my mother. Paul invited us to join him for breakfast and then to the EMP museum, and we accepted.
Breakfast was held at
5-Points Cafe, a cheap but great food dive found a few blocks from the Needle. It has some really good french toast, and their tofu scramble, despite sounding horrible, is quite tasty... lots of curry.
The 5-Point is known for, besides food, a periscope built into the mens bathroom. My initial thought was that you had to stick your face in something (similar to a submarine), but my thoughts were unfounded. The periscope is a window built at face level to the urinal (a dip in the floor), which shows the Space Needle. I think a tree has been slowly growing in front of the view (the cafe, I think, opened in 1929?).
I recommend the experience, especially if you have as good of company as we did.
We then went to the EMP (Experience Music Project Museum) Museum, which also houses the Science Fiction Museum, which I've been dying to set eyes on for some time.
The SF side of things is very small, but was entertaining and filled with many-a-relic from nifty SF historical movies/books/tv shows. My favorites were the Superman suit and Kirk's Captain's Chair from the Enterprise.
Here's a picture of Paul thinking about busting the glass so he could show folks what a real super man looks like.
Note the Captain's Chair (below) has Tribbles all over it.
The EMP museum itself is an amazing experience. You can learn/try out all kinds of different instruments and musical electronics. There are sound booths that you can (we did) all cram into to try out, and even perform. I can now play drums (the same as I always did: poorly).
There was also a large guitar exhibit that was simply stunning, and a Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix area, which were pretty cool, too.
We also swung over to the AC/DC exhibit, and Mom showed her stuff. Move over Angus... Mama's gonna show you how Rock is Made...
