Greenland Cafe

Last night Christene and I went to the Greenland Cafe on Washington St. We had gone food shopping and when we got home realized one of the ingredients we thought we had at home, we did but it had expired. Rather than go back out, and end up eating at 10PM we decided to get take out, which got upgraded to let's try the new Polish restaurant, which then got upgraded to drinks! and bar food.

We decided to try out Green Land Cafe, it's a fairly new locavore restaurant on Washington Street  in Salem. The reviews on Yelp do not do it justice, but the fact that they annoyed the vegans gave it points in my book. It was recommended to us by Adam at the Boston Shaker. If you haven't been there, you need to go either online or in person to the oh so has been Paris of the 90's Davis Sq, Somerville. It is a store that sells only cocktail supplies, tools , bitters and books. We keep going for one thing, and wind up with a bag of things on the way out. Recommended!

They have a late night bar menu every night which is cool because despite Salem being filthy with witches, it still clings to its puritanical roots and rolls up the sidewalks early. Located in the old Odd Fellows Hall (insert sad trombone sound) the bar was made from the planks of the upstairs dance hall. U shaped and loaded with delicious liquor including good whiskey and craft cocktails.

There was a three piece band that played quietly and that alone was worth a tip on the way out as there is nothing worse than going to a bar where you can't hear people talk, playing some type of soft rock. Christene got the St Germain Aroused served in a cocktail glass. Four cougars came in and sat down and one asked what is that some type of Martini? I was prepared to shun her, but C was chatty and explained about the drink which was St Germaine liquor, Cointreau, Vodka, cranberry juice, and ginger puree. It was served with a buzz button or szechuan flower on a toothpick over the glass. C compared it to pufferfish toxin as it numbs your face. I would have preferred to explain to them that a Martini is Gin and Vermouth, preferably with Orange bitters and served in a cocktail glass as there is no such thing as a martini glass. A Bradford is a vodka and vermouth drink vulgarly called a vodka martini. Other variations are just cocktails at best.

I had an Aviation which is gin, lemon juice, maraschino liquor, and creme de violette, they used creme yvette which did not yield a drink like the pale blue sky but was nevertheless delicious. We followed this up with another St Germain for C, and a Lavender Sidecar for me. The drinks were not jiggered which meant Christene's two were not exactly the same, but they were all very good. When we come back I've heard that they make a great Sazerac which we have been experimenting with, so I am looking forward to that and a Manhattan.

We got two appetizers a truffle infused honey mushroom and goat cheese on flatbread, and an artichoke and goat cheese with warm bread. Both were good and filling. Service was  excellent. Recommended!
