It's been a while since I've posted here, for a variety of reasons. I thought I would chime in with a few quick notes.
-Moving day is coming up. On Saturday, I'll be transferring to my new apartment, in another state, to begin my working from home. If all goes ideally, I'll have an internet connection almost as soon as I get there, so as far as you all are concerned it'll be like I never left. In fact, the more flexible schedule and lack of commute that the new job situation provides will give me more time online, not less.
-If there's one thing that increase the scariness of planning a wedding, it's seeing another wedding in progress. I went to my best friend's wedding last week, and while I should have been concentrating on the lovely ceremony, most of my time was spent thinking "we haven't done that yet... or that... or that."
-Superman Returns looks like the win, and is rumored to include a Spidey 3 trailer, which makes it even more the win. I told my brother I would pay him for his moving-day help with a Superman ticket.
-Critics need to shut up about New SMB being "awesome but derivative." It's nostalgic. That's the fucking point. Stick with the "awesome" thing.
-If you want to see the themes about government oppression and public apathy carried out much better than V for Vendetta, watch Serenity. I made the connection recently, and it's amazing how much more poignant Serenity manages to be as it avoids ham-fisting it.
-Sony has been continuing it's PR policy of grabbing their ankles and telling geeks to go for it. It seems almost cruel to even outline specific examples at this point, but a few editor blogs at 1UP.com have been particularly well-spoken on the subject.
Sam Kennedy on Sony's recent missteps, and
John Davison on the PSP fizzle. Davison's is particuarly good, since it includes several notes of what Sony should do to fix the PSP's image. Take notes, damn it, Sony! You have potential!
-Of all the things people complain about with the PSP, I think the power indicator light is the one that bothers me the most. It seems woefully undermentioned as a weakness, really. It's positioned, almost as if planned, to be blocked by your thumb during gameplay. The thing could be blinking to alert you of low power, with your thumb resting comfortably over it, and you would never know until the damn thing just shuts off on you, which it has done to me. Know what, Sony? When I'm in the middle of a game, I don't want to be thinking about moving my thumb every few minutes to check on the damn indicator light. Between that and the poorly-implimented analog nub, it sounds like we need a PSP Lite in the works to make the system what it should've been to begin with.
-I think I'm becoming addicted to VH1's pop-culture commentary-mockumentaries. Soon I'll have my own place, with cable, and I'll be there all alone (for a month, until the wedding). I expect my TV to basically involve VH1 and Adult Swim nonstop, especially with new Venture Bros starting.
-The DS Opera browser looks pretty cool, but I can't imagine such a use for the device. PSP's browser is clunky, but to be honest, that's not really the reason I don't use it. I don't use it because, in any situation that I tend to have Wi-Fi connectability, I have my PowerBook with me anyway. I wouldn't sacrifice increased functionality for cool factor. So while the DS Opera combination looks like a decided step up from the PSP browser, I think I'll pass, just based on the fact that I don't see a particular purpose in it. Then again, that is what I originally thought about the DS Lite.
-I have, I am sure, about 2 dozen or more "new" CDs that I've resolved to review here eventually, for the purposes of cataloguing my tastes when I look back upon the year in December to decide what I liked best. I am getting to it. No seriously.
