Duckling Update!

May 20, 2006 19:57

Today was bright and shiny, so I went back for more duckling pictures, and really hit the jackpot! The ducks were split into, seemingly, two different families today. One female duck had just two babies with her, and was accompanied most of the time by a male. A second female had four ducklings. The mother with the larger brood was significantly more cautious about me, keeping a distance of at least 6 or 7 meters most of the time. The other mother actually led her kids right by me two times while I was squatting there in the streambed right by the water.

So I was getting some good pictures already, but then David went back to the apartment to get some leftover bread, and that helped out immensely. The smaller family got very close, within a meter of us. Even the more protective mother came in to about half her previous limit to take part in the feeding.

Almost like a real photographer, I took a TON of pictures, most of which I threw away. My camera's memory card holds 347 pictures at 3 megapixel resolution. I probably snapped about 150. After sorting through them a couple times I pared it down to 39 that I'm keeping, and the best seventeen of them follow (no corpses this time):

This next one is my favorite. I'm including the full picture with the pretty water and a cropped one for a closer look at the ducklings:

It's the cocked head that does it, I think. David says it's almost like a "precious moments" figurine. :)
