This morning I finally found this year's batch of ducklings! There seem to be seven of them this year, at least, seven associated with this particular mother. In the last few days some of the other adult ducks have been wandering around the area a lot, even coming right up to our window and watching us from time to time. David
got a nice picture of that.
Anyway, it's grey and drizzly out today, so the pictures aren't as cheery as
last year's, but I'll wait for a nice day to come along and snap a few more.
So, here's the very first duckling of 2006!!!
Ohhh.... I made myself sad. :(
The rest are a little more pleasing.
Here's three of the guys, probably the same dudes that have been hanging out by our window:
When we found the babies, they and Mom were hiding under a bush to stay out of the drizzle a bit, but our presence disturbed them and they hopped into the water.
They split up a little bit, and some of the ducklings were trying to climb up over one of the barrier/terrace things that the water flows over, but they're way too little yet to get up on them, so they just jump at the slope a few times before giving up.
It's also really adorable when they're trying to go downhill because they fall over and roll most of the way.
A nice shot of Mom:
