lots of new Kindle books

A few months ago, I bought Humble Bundle of 21 works by John Scalzi. Last night, I decided to download them and install them on our Kindle, in anticipation of travel.
The books are in .epub format, which is supported by Kindle. But they're not from the Amazon store, so I couldn't use the automatic installation process.
I initially downloaded the books (two of which are actually fiction shorter than book length) onto my Linux laptop Shadowfax, then copy it via a USB cable to the Kindle. Inconveniently, the laptop didn't know how to talk to the Kindle via USB.
Next plan was to download the books again, to my wife's main laptop, and try the USB procedure again. That didn't work either.
Third plan was to try to install it via e-mail to [our-device-name]@kindle.com so Amazon could install it like a book from the Amazon Kindle store. That was slow, but it actually worked.
Annoyingly, however, that procedure presented the books with titles like "redshirts_johnscalzi" (the file names of the books) instead of Redshirts. But at least it worked. It even extracted the author's name correctly. Still, I'm tempted to rename all the files to the book titles and reinstall them.
Since then I've read both shorter works. They were entertaining.
