Winter Storm Warning

Mar 01, 2009 23:19

Friday, the custodian that cleans my room asked me if I was excited for the possible snow day on Monday. I looked at him like he was crazy, and he filled me in on the most recent forecasts of a snow storm hitting the area over the weekend. I scoffed, checked Accuweather, and concluded there's no way anything's going to happen.
Fast-forward to today: The snow was falling like rain for most of the afternoon/early evening and counties were closing schools left and right. Surprisingly, Amherst was one of the last counties in the area to call the closing, when we're usually one of the first to close at the sign of a flake. Most likely, they were trying to avoid closing if at all possible because of writing SOL's on Tuesday and Wednesday and nine weeks tests starting Friday. Yep. It's the week from hell, where I have no wiggle room in my plans. After all the prayers that God would just make the storm sit over NC for about a week before coming, I finally succumbed to the idea that I'm going to have to just pray that my kids can be responsible enough to review on their own before our huge test on Friday..... buuuuut I'm kind of doubting it.
As dead set as I was against this snow, as soon as we noticed the rain rapidly turning to snow, my childlike love of this weather returned. I'm like Lorelai Gilmore when it comes to snow. I love walking in it and experiencing how quiet just seems to fall over everything. Snow makes everything so pretty, I can't wait to get up tomorrow and wander around the neighborhood. The cousins and I are also planning on going to the church to sled/snowboard in the backyard. It's been so long since I've really had a chance to play in the snow!

Salsa dancing
update: Lessons are going pretty well. The past few weeks, there have been more guys showing up so the girls don't have to keep partnering up with each other. We've learned a simple lift, several dips, a couple of combos.. Just enough to try out on the dance floor and feel like a professional. One of the weeks, I had a great dance partner for the whole night. He knew what he was doing and was confident enough to take the lead. Many of the guys I've danced with so far aren't really comfortable with the moves and end up being really jerky or don't do a good job guiding me through whatever steps they want to take. But this guy was awesome. The next week, Anna got the chance to dance with him, and this past week, he was MIA. But that's okay, because we learned Rueda, which is like speed-dating salsa. Everyone stands in a huge circle and the girls get passed around from one guy to the next based on directions that are called out like square dancing. It was kind of disastrous at first because there were too many people in the room, but eventually people got the hang of it and it worked out pretty well. Now that college spring breaks are upon us, salsa dancing is taking a break till the third week in March.. I don't know what I'm going to do with my Friday nights!
