64damn_prompts The night before his first official game as the starting pitcher, Junta has trouble sleeping. Counting sheep, rereading his favorite comic books, listening to music, thinking happy thoughts--he tries it all to no avail.
Afraid that sleep deprivation might negatively affect his performance, he tries one more time to close his eyes and meditate. He manages to be successful for a full minute and a half before a vivid image of the Coach reprimanding him ["ARE YOU SAYING YOU LOST US THE GAME COZ YOU DIDN'T GET ENOUGH SLEEP?! I'LL TELL YOU WHAT, YOU CAN GET ALL THE SLEEP YOU WANT ON THE BENCH FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON."] comes to his mind.
Junta immediately scrambles for his phone and dials a familiar number.
Four rings. And then, 'Junta...' The voice sounds groggy. 'What are you doing up so late?'
"S-sorry, Kazu-san. It's just...I can't sleep."
A sharp, sibilant sound gets transmitted over the line as Kazuki sighs. 'You won't be doing this alone, you know. Rio, Shingo, Yama-chan and I--we're all going to be there.'
"I, I know but--willyoustayonthephonewithmeforawhile?"
A brief pause. 'Alright, I'll convince Coach to let you skip morning practice tomorrow. You'll need all the sleep you can get. We're lucky the game doesn't start until after school.'
"Kazu-san..."
'Yeah?'
"Thank you."
And so begins a late night conversation that will ease Junta's restlessness and lull him to sleep in a matter of minutes.
