Its been a long time and now my update comes because of abortion.
In South Dakota (of all palces) it looks as if they will pass a bill banning all abortions. Please see CNN.com for details.
This bothers me.
I am pro-life and I am pro-choice. What does that mean? It means that I do not believe that people should carelessly or easily (and when I say easily I mean ridiculously easy with no thought or consultation). That is not the way our current system is. Abortion is difficult and a process. One cannot simply walk into a clinc and get in line for an abortion.
I am frustrated with law makers who see the legal banning of abortion as the solution. There is another problem going on. Girls and being raped and feeling social pressure to have sex young. They live in a society and sometimes a culture that does not permit them to talk about sex, condoms, issues with their partner. What is a girl expected to do when an older family friend is pushing themselves on them and she is not allowed to ask him to wear a condom let alone stop? There are much more important issues going on that lead to people in desperate situations. Perhaps, we need to research what is bringing people into these situation and how we can better deter people from a situation where they would need to seek out such a desperate sad solution.
Futhermore, I also believe that the Bush administration and some other politicans will often fit tooth and nail for someone until they are born. It is a ridiculous challenge to keep funding in our schools, to keep headstart programs going, to provide enough prenatal care, provide quality food stamps to pregnant mothers, provide educational assistance for mothers with children, offer mothers subsidizes to pay for child care while they work, etc etcETC. Perhaps then it would also help laww makers to see that lawmakers aren't the stereotype they believe it is....cracked out minority mothers who get dozens of abortions a year...they are people and probably very far away from this grossly inaccurate stereotype.
Sometimes I really can't decide if I need to be involved in politics and political issues or if I would be too frustrated and pissed off all the time.
It is so overwhleming and the things I am fighting are so much bigger than I or my efforts will ever be.
PS- I had an interview for my first choice post grad service program in Ecuador..it went very well.
