Have a Merry Christmas or just happy holidays!

In Germany, tomorrow  - Christmas Eve (or Heiligabend/Holy Evening as we say) - is when we decorate the tree, exchange gifts and be with our closest loved ones and go to midnight mass (or not, depending on faith or tradition). Essentially what in the English-speaking countries happens on the 25th occurs on Christmas Eve here.
Traditional foods on this evening are goose, duck or carp - or potato salad with sausages or meat balls. Nobody knows how or when the latter came into being as a Heiligabend-dish but it's served in many homes. My mom will make it too and I love it.

The actual Christmas days are usually for visiting relatives with the accompanied excessive eating and family rows. On the 27th and til New Year's Eve everyone rushes like mad to the next big city, if they don't live in one, to trade in gift certificates, exchange sucky presents and immediately spend money gifts in the end of year sales....
