the weekend
this past weekend was amazing, to say the least. after mary-kate's grad party i drove out to the lake to meet my mom and we cleaned things up before people got there. the sun was out the entire day. jake came out there for the first time of the summer which was really nice 'cause i haven't hung out with him all summer. my cousin alexis whom i absolutely adore came out there for the day and spent the night. we discussed life and the new job she got and boy woes (she just broke up with her boyfriend) and it was just good. my aunt, uncle, and two little cousins came in from north carolina to see us this weekend too... i haven't seen them for a couple of years and i actually got some time to bond with austin and ashley... they are already six and eight, it's unbelievable. saturday night after everyone had left we rented "best in show" for alexis to see and her, my mom and i all fell asleep anyway.
sunday a couple of my mom's siblings came out there with my cousins so it was this big little party, full of jimmy buffett (the concert is today!!!) and drinking and talking about michigan state... most of my mom's siblings are alums, and so are my cousins, so they were discussing the best bars to go to and i'm thinking 'yeah i'm glad my dad is inside right now...'... but it was all good fun. sunday i was trying my hardest to get tan. i had the oil by my side and re-applied every two minutes and sat outside the entire day. i actually succeeded in my efforts and i have a horrible tanline from my bathingsuit top but what can you do. i ended up staying out there sunday night with my mom and my dog while my dad and brother went home. all in all, great weekend.
yesterday
yesterday is the most classic example of how the best days can come out of the ones that aren't planned at all. i had to drive my dog home and pick up my brother on the way at my dad's office, so by the time i got home it was almost 3:00. i had the craziest craving for pita cafe and was trying to see who would want to go on such short notice. i couldn't get a hold of anyone, so finally i just call adrienne because i figured she was still driving home from her college shopping in new york. she asks if she can call me back in a second, and when she does she calls from home... it ended up that she got home late sunday night so she was just unpacking and hanging out that afternoon. i told her we were going to pita cafe and i was picking her up in a half hour. we go to pita cafe and had this amazing plethora of food... milk smoothies, hummus, her salad, my chicken schwarma (shweta, spelling?) and of course lots of gossip back and forth. after lunch we go over to the new store in birmingham, miss kate's, which is a very cute and overpriced store... i guess that is to be expected for a birmingham store.
on the way there nicky calls us and asks what we are up to, so we have him meet us at coldstone's and he was mad because he and adrienne were supposed to go see the matrix reloaded on the imax screen at henry ford's... so we get our ice cream and nicky convinces adrienne's mother to let her see the movie, but that meant that they had to leave birmingham right then or else they'd miss it. i didn't really mind because i was just going to walk around for a little while and then drive home.
so i go over to tower and check out the magazines, see that they have the new allure so i buy that and start walking out and down the street towards jacobson's parking lot, when i see a salsa-red jeep liberty with a bunch of stuff on the antenna and i look to see who's driving and low and behold, it's ritazza! so i scream 'hey rita!' and the light was just about to turn green so i jump into her car and we go park by the palladium. we had a chance to talk and catch up a little bit, which was nice. we sat down at the tables outside of cosi, where we saw more ck people like melissa and nicky's little sister...
sure enough, i'm looking across the street towards caribou and i see this really tall girl with a pink shirt on the corner waiting to cross and i say to rita 'i think that's ally!' and as i get up to walk towards the corner she sees me and i wave. she was with libby and danny and she says 'hey we're gonna go see *finding nemo* right now, do you wanna go with us?!' and i was so stoked because i thought i was the only person on the planet who hadn't seen it yet, so rita and i go with them and the previews were going just as we were grabbing concessions and we sat down in time to see the mini-film before it... the mini-film was classic.
and *finding nemo* is the most adorable, funniest movie... i couldn't get over it. ellen is just hysterical on her own but when you put her voice to a fish's body it makes things that much better. i was so glad that i was able to see it with friends and be all 'yeah we're going off to college in two months but we can still pay to see a disney movie in the theater together and actually love it'... everything was just awesome. i loved the sea-gulls... "mine mine mine mine mine"... hehe. leaving the theater rita and i see jason riopelle so i talked with him a little bit, and as rita and i are discussing the millions of cranbrook students we had seen that day, i see tedo walking across the street with ashley goodman and another girl. it was crazy. i honestly should just walk around birmingham on late monday afternoons... there's more of a chance to see a bunch of people than if i had actually planned to see friends... it was just really nice to know that people still existed, if that doesn't sound horrible. i just mean that for some reason, after people have graduated, it feels like they don't exist anymore because i don't see them every day anymore, and it's so strange to see them at a store or out in birmingham because it's been so long... it's nice though.
so all of this happened yesterday in the span of about four hours. yesterday afternoon at 3:00 i had no idea what i was going to do with myself and then i ended up seeing a bunch of my friends and the movie i've been dying to see. it was a wonderful day.
not to mention the fact that the radio was playing the best songs all day yesterday... driving justin home they played "my favorite mistake" and this new song called "amazing" which i just love.
driving into adrienne's neighborhood they played "don't you forget about me"...
driving home from birmingham i heard roy orbison's "you got it" and there was a song before that and it's making me mad that i can't remember it now... all i can remember was that i was thinking how much i loved hearing great songs back to back on the radio... or when you switch stations just to see what else is on and then you turn right to a song that you love and it's at the very beginning...
today
today is the jimmy buffett concert.
my family is going completely crazy.
all weekend we listened to buffett music and i looked online because rumor had it that the set list was on his website and sure enough there was a set list from a concert he did in may of this year... i'm hoping that he sticks to it for the mostpart because he opens up with "great heart" and it's the best opener he's ever done, and he also sings "she's got you" and "mexico" and "honey do" and it would just be amazing. so my mission today is to get my outfit together... lots of leis, floral prints, and a party attitude. and of course i have to eat a cheeseburger. because that's just the way it has to be.
"-i've got your picture you gave to me
and it's signed with love
just like it used to be
only thing different
only thing new
i've got your picture
she's got you-"
"-my garden is filled with papayas and mangos
my life is a mixture of reggaes and tangos
taste for the good life
i can live it no other way
while out on the beach there are two empty chairs
that say more than the people who ever sit there
from under my lone palm i can look out on the day
where no bird flies by my window
no ship is tied to my tree
love is a wave building to a crescendo
ride if you will
ride it with me
i knew this girl made of memories and phrases
who lived her whole life in both chapters and stages
danced 'til the dawn
wished all her worries away-"
