birthday!

Today is my honey's birthday!

Dear scarletts_awry,

Today is your birthday. You got the present I mailed to you a week ago, and I know you liked the book and the Starbucks gift card, but I wanted to do something more, something less tangible. So here we are on LJ, where we met.

My only question now is: what should I do for your birthday?

I would write you poetry if I could, because you wrote some for me, but I don't know how. (You say you can't write poetry, but I really can't.)

I thought about writing you the Mac/Hawkes story that we had been talking about and that I know you want to see at some point, or some other story, but I'm still struggling with writing and with trying to find my voice again. That's all right; I think I'm going to find it again.

But then I thought, well, if I can't quite write a story in the usual fashion, I could do the next best thing. I could tell you what happens between two characters, just like I do when we're on the phone or e-mailing each other and we start riffing on an idea.

So, with that idea in mind, here's a few paragraphs about what Mac and Hawkes would do to celebrate Mac's birthday.

They would start off with dinner. Dinner would be sushi, of course. Hawkes would tell Mac that he tried to get them reservations for Nobu, but that he couldn't. Mac would tell him not to worry, because he would have been shocked if he had managed to pull it off. Hawkes says, oh, don't worry, some day I will. And that makes Mac smile. A lot of things that Hawkes does or says make Mac smile, mostly because just being around Hawkes makes him feel good, and sometimes even feel like he can let down his guard.

Since they couldn't get into Nobu, they go to one of the sushi restaurants they usually frequent, and they get beer and a lot of different rolls and many pieces of sashimi, and they sit and relax and eat pieces of fresh, raw tuna and the sweet, near-melting yellowtail, and they let the sweetness of the fish mix with the bite of the wasabi and crisp pieces of fresh ginger.

They would talk over dinner. Mac would want to talk about work at first, as usual, but eventually Hawkes would be able to steer him away from that, and they'd get into a conversation about whichever one of Hawkes' many interests are capturing his attention at the time. This, of course, could be almost anything (which is one of the things that Mac likes best about Hawkes). On this particular evening, since they're having sushi, that might be the book that Hawkes is reading about feudal Japan, or it might be about something completely unrelated, like the upcoming Melvin van Peebles tribute at MoMA or the Beyond Babylon exhibition at the Met. Hawkes would insist on picking up the check over Mac's protests, since it is, as he would remind him patiently, Mac's birthday.

After dinner, they would go to a jazz club. Not the place Mac occasionally plays at, but some other quiet little place that they both enjoy going to. They would sit and have some more drinks and listen to the music, and even though they wouldn't talk much except for some brief conversation in between sets, it would be enough for both of them to just be there and be together with good music and good drinks and a good dinner behind them. Mac would pretty much have a constant smile on his face by this time.

After the club, Hawkes would suggest that they go back to his place for the night. They would walk down the street, still not talking much, but both feeling content. Once they got back to the apartment, Hawkes would give Mac his birthday gift. Mac would get all flustered and say that he didn't expect Hawkes to do that and that he shouldn't have. Hawkes says he knows that, but he did anyway.

Mac would then open the package and discover that, to his delight, Hawkes had gotten him a kit to build a mini-trebuchet. Hawkes would immediately start describing his plans for how Mac could set it up on his desk at work and how they could test it out. Mac would make a token protest and try to say that it's really not appropriate for work and that it would be better if he kept it on his desk at home instead, but his grin would give him away, and he'd already be laughing.

Hawkes would kiss Mac then, and Mac would kiss him back. Mac would thank Hawkes for the good birthday celebration, and Hawkes would say that he hopes he gets to do it again, lots more times. Mac would that he hopes so, too, and that would make Hawkes smile.

They would kiss some more and then would go to bed, although they'd both be briefly tempted to stay up and start building the trebuchet.

And that's how Mac and Hawkes would celebrate Mac's birthday.

Like I said back at the beginning of this, we met on LJ, and I remember you telling me that some of my Mac/Hawkes stories were the first fic of mine you ever read. I never dreamed back then, when you first commented on one of my entries, that three years later we'd be in a relationship, and that I'd be writing this birthday letter to you.

Happy birthday, sweetie. I wish I could be there to celebrate with you, but I hope that you have a fabulous day.

Love (and I mean it),
Stellaluna
