More PSP/DS Musings (aka links to self)

* HOLY CRAP! There's a MicroSD-to-MemoryStickDuo Adapter that has TWO slots in it! And it's apparently PSP compatible too! I wonder how it works? I presume when it saves data, it doesn't split the data it between two cards, right? This site has some information on it, but hmm... I don't know if I want to dedicate two MicroSD cards to this adapter ( Read more... )

On PSP:
1. DealExtreme has the PhotoFast adapter for less, including free shipping. If you don't mind waiting awhile, anyways (Usually takes 1-2 weeks to receive). I have one, and am waiting for 16GB Class6 MicroSDHCs to come down in price (currently $50 each on Newegg).
2. The 2Ks are EXTREMELY easy to hack. Don't even need a Pandora Battery anymore. Follow this info
here. Dunno about 3Ks, but I'd prefer a 2K over the 3K, due to the interlacing of the 3K's screen (I'd say it's a worse side-effect than the 1K/2K's ghosting).
3. The homebrew app, RemoteJoyLite, allows you to take screenshots/video on your PC through the USB port, regardless of PSP model! An animated GIF I made from PangYa: Fantasy Golf:

(Note that the game itself, and the bitmap stills, are much more colorful... Curse GIF and its 256 color limitation!).
4. Latest CFW from Dark Alex is 5.00 M33-6. I see no need in upgrading further, as no OFW beyond that has introduced any new features. And I really don't trust any of the other CFW groups.

On DS:
1. For DS/DS Lite, I recommend the CycloDS Evolution. It's a bit pricier than the other flash carts, but it's quality stuff. For DSi, for now I recommend Acekard 2i with the CFW called AKAIO (Acekard All-In-One). It's cheap... and so is the quality. I noticed that, for testing purposes, games like Pokémon or Animal Crossing run slower in certain spots on the Acekard than it does for CycloDS. Unfortunately, the Cyclo team doesn't have a DSi solution yet. I think they're waiting until the security for DSi-mode is cracked, so they'll have a flash cart that works in both DS- and DSi-mode (DSi-compatable cards, currently, only run in DS-mode).

2. The EZ Flash 3in1 is meant to be used in conjunction with a Slot-1 card. It's used for rumble, DS Browser memory (DS Browser still sucks, though), and GBA playback. I've found GBA support to be a bit... spotty. It works... but I've had issues with it keeping my game saves (but the only games I've tried on it are the Mother 3 translation and Rhythm Tengoku). You can flash a GBA game to the device, and have it play off as a normal GBA game... but, again, with that save issue.
I would probably recommend something such as the M3 miniSD or M3 Lite (make sure they're NOT the Pro version; it has less memory so GBA support doesn't work)... if you can still find anyone carrying them. I've personally had good experience with the M3 cards, so I'd recommend them.

PSP1: Well I read that the PSP phats (PSP-1000) have a problem with the double-microSD adapter; apparently the phats are a little stronger with their electricity versus other models, and can short out the adapter. I don't think it's worth the risk much, and so I'm probably just gonna get the single adapter. I also found some cheap memory at Amazon.com, so I think once I get the card and some extra microSD cards, I'll be set. Best of all I found this cute little card holder at Daiso for $1.50; I can get one or two more of them and be able to hold all my cards, and I'll be even more set. :D

PSP2: ALL-REET! Yah I was so used to the idea that I had to make/buy a Pandora's battery in order to hack my brother's PSP-2000 that I just never felt like doing it. But now that I don't even need one, that really puts a smile on my face. And once my brother can play Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis on his PSP, there'll be a smile on his face too! :D

And I agree with you: when I heard about the interlacing issues with the PSP-3000s, I came to realize that the ghostings of the earlier models isn't so bad. Now I wonder what the PSPgo will be like... I'm still very interested in getting one, but maybe I should just save my cash.

PSP3: Really? That's pretty sick! I gotta get it as soon as I can! Thanks for telling me... now I can take shots of everything in my PSP!

PSP4: Well the custom firmware from DarkAlex is the only one I trust (actually, there's more than Dark Alex's m33?). I also don't mind upgrading past v5.0 if its out there; I like staying on the top of things as much as possible, even if the +0.1 extra versions doesn't add "major features".

I can't understand why the 1K would output more power to the MSPD slot than the 2K or 3K would. I think there's a standardized amount of voltage used for MSPD slots, universally.

I've seen some photos of the PSP Go... it has the same interlacing as the 3K does.

There's the GEN line of CFWs, which go past 5.00 and also are (somewhat) compatable with 3Ks and 2Ks with the TA-88v3 mobo (older exploits won't work on the 2K with the v3 hardware). But, really, there isn't any reason to upgrade... at least not until Dark Alex releases a new CFW (which probably won't be until PSP Go is out).

Yah, you got me as to what the issue is with the adapter and the PSP-1000's... but that's what people say about it, and I'm not about to take that risk. I'll just get myself a standard, one-slot mSD2Msd adapter.

About the PSPgo... bummer on the interlacing. Maybe I won't get it.

And as for the other custom firmwares... huh. Well, I'll just stick with Dark Alex's work... he's the only one whose work I trust the most (if at all). :)

DS1: What do you mean by "DSi cards currently run in DS mode"? Do you mean that they're waiting to be able to do things with and add stuff into the DSi menu, versus just being able to "play" a "game" that just plays other DS games (if you get what I mean)? If that's the case, maybe I should wait until they can hack the DSi a bit more... moreish... before buying a DSi-compatible cart. Therefore... Mr. myOriginalNDS? Your fate as my main DS is sealed.... for now.

Well, things like DSiWare or DSi-only retail games (when they come out... and they will) will have full access to the DSi's power.
The current DSi-compatable flash carts only run in "DS mode"... Meaning, it's really just a normal DS flash cart that bypasses the new security blocks on DSi. So, it can't take advantage of the added power or features of DSi.

Ok so I'm thinking about getting a DSi-compatible flash cart now, despite being only a DS-mode cart; if anything I can just use that as a replacement for my current R4DS (which has also since broke and I need a piece of tape to keep the microSD card in the unit).

Then when a better flash cart comes out for the DSi that does have access to the DSi's full power, then I'll get that.
