My life

A couple of you asked about my sponsorship deal with Allianz. Yes, I accepted it and am obligated to Allianz for 5 years after I graduate. Ron had a lawyer review the contract before I signed it and the lawyer said it was very fair, just like the type of thing students attending West Point or Annapolis sign committing themselves to the military for 5 years after they graduate. After 5 years, I can do whatever I want. I will be only 26 at that point so.... I did it. It took effect on January 1. Tuition this upcoming year will be over 25,000, books, etc. on top of it. What it means is I am banking a whole lot of money. I don't smoke, don't drink or party much so my only real expense is Rent. With the stipend Allianz is now paying me on top of my salary, I am banking most of my paychecks and living on what the stipend is. (The stipend is 2500/month.) I have over 20,000 saved in the Allianz credit union and am depositing 2500-3000 more every month. Ron says I should start thinking about an investment program. So, when I go back to PA for Dana's babies, Ron is going to set me up with his investment counselor and I will start investing. Ron says with all the money I am saving him now that Allianz is paying my way instead of him, it is the least he could do. Ron says we will keep it conservative to start. I have to do some research in my spare time (HAH!) about the basics of investing. It has occurred to me I have a chance to make some really serious money at a fairly early age here.

Someone also asked why Mrs H was so interested in my statistical analysis program. Mrs H said Allianz is concerned at "the highest levels" with cumulative effects of earthquakes on various buildings. For example, a 4.0 quake in downtown LA might not do any apparent damage to a structure but the same quake 90 days later may cause walls to crack because they were weakened by the first shaking. How likely is that to occur? Mrs H said a project like that has been one Allianz has wanted for a long time but just has not had the time. Other priorities were higher. So if I can do such a program and it makes sense to other actuaries from a mathematical standpoint, I have repaid Allianz to some degree for what they are doing for me. I have to do the work for class anyway so why not let Allianz get something out of it? It makes me seem like a team player and I have already discovered that is very important in this company's culture.

Work calls. I am working from 3:00 to 8:00 tonight and then have some studying to do.
