It had almost been a month, in this place.
This fact dawned on Sasuke with unpleasant suddenness as he made yet another unforeseen trip to Hige's cell, tracing the path he'd left before so many times. A month, and what had he accomplished? He was no closer to breaking free than he was before, nor was he succeeding at protecting those who'd managed to get close to him even in this horrible place.
He'd sworn to protect them. Naruto, who he'd known since childhood, and those he'd met here--Matt and Jack and Johnny...and Hige.
They'd taken him. They'd taken him and held him and twisted him and fucked him up just like they'd done to Sasuke, and it--fuck, he hadn't done a thing to prevent it, he'd just--fallen asleep, and when he'd woken up it--he'd been gone. Just like before, when he'd ran home from school, only to find--only to see, to walk on the corpses of everyone he loved--
Throwing open the door, he held back his frustration carefully as his eyes fell on his friend, who was curled on the bed, asleep--looking smaller than Sasuke had ever seen him before. Thinner...weaker. His stomach flipped, and he took a step tentatively forward, wondering if anything could have prepared him for this.
"Hige...?"
