I am helping a friend create her first "Steampunk" costume, and she and I are putting something together based upon her original suggestion of something "Schoolmarm-ish."
The friend in question is an older lady who wears about a 20 or a 22. I'm seeing a lot of images of steampunk costume out there, but I'm not seeing very many older or heaver-set models.
I'm interested in what the good people of this forum have to say on the subject.
So far, what we have discussed includes:
Due to health concerns, she does not wish to wear a corset.
She has admired a victorian jacket style with the larger sleeves and the close-fitted bodice.
Due to the beauty and curve of her legs (mine should be so shapely when I am her age!) I've persuaded her to wear interesting stockings and a shorter skirt.
We've also been discussing bloomers or fancy "undergarments" that could peek out from under the skirt. My suggestion was black cotton sateen bloomers with heirloom decorations and eyelet lace, with a brightly colored ribbon woven through.
She also has wide feet, so we're going to lean toward a more "masculine" or "Punk" boot, rather than a dainty ladies' boot.
I'd just loan her a bunch of my things, but we are no longer even remotely the same size. (I'm wearing a 14/16 these days.) She is going to wind up with one of my pairs of grey-and-black striped socks, though...
