"Britons did not hesitate to exchange their bowlers for turbans, tarbushes or mandarin caps if only they were given men whom they could lead into battle. Lawrence of Arabia was a wonder and a curiosity in this century, but there were hundreds of his countrymen like him who performed similar exploits in the previous century."
- Byron Farewell, Queen Victoria's Little Wars
While it may lean a little too heavily on the military exploits for those members of our community who quite rightly point out that war isn't everything, the point still stands: Just because these chaps were a tad bellicose, doesn't mean they weren't on to something.
The book is excellent, incidentally, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a smashing read or some inspiration. It starts with Eldred Pottinger, the 13th Light, and of course, General Pollock's singular achievement, and just goes on from there.
