So thank you to everyone who responded to my pressing need the other day. I ended up swinging by JoAnn's and acquiring this: http://www.butterick.com/item/B3648.htm?tab=list/costumes&page=allRead more... )

This is an excellent pattern. It is on my list of things to redesign and custom mod for cloths and outfit. This is one of the few patterns I have been able to find with what looks like a decent cut-away coat with tails.

I look forward to seeing your post with the final product. ^_^

Now I just need to learn to sew :)

Absolutely essential step that is very easy to omit if you're new to sewing, and also very tempting to omit even if you're a more experienced sewer and should know better...

Make a test version first before you cut into your good fabric to check the fit and work out any issues with working with the pattern.

For the pants you could probably get away with using muslin (a cheap fabric), though definitely use the thickets/heaviest you can find. For the jacket though, even a heavy muslin might be too thin to give you an accurate sense of how it will really fit and drape. For it then, I suggest looking through the clearance fabric section to find the cheapest fabric you can that has a similar weight to what you'll actually be using for the jacket. (It can be the nastiest/scariest fabric you've ever seen, as long as it's got a similar weight/drape.)
