New community: steampoof

I just founded a new LJ community, steampoof--read further if you're interested!

SteamPoof--Brass Goggles and Pink Carnations

This is a community for the intersection of SteamPunk culture and interests and LGBTQ culture, etc.

To paraphrase the great Oscar Wilde, "We have nothing to declare but our own steaminess."

This is a community to explore and indeed enlighten the place of LGBTQ people, literature, issues, and aesthetics within the realm of the larger SteamPunk culture. As SteamPunk tends to draw most of its cultural cues from the Victorian period, it is a noteworthy coincidence that the recognition of homosexuality, the visibility of queer people within wider cultures, and the popularization of explicitly LGBTQ literary themes, began in this same period. People who are interested in these matters separately, as well as their cross-over, are most welcome to be members of this group.

Anyone and everyone is free to join this group, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or any other matter, as long as they are respectful and are not homophobic, transphobic, biphobic, or indeed heterophobic, in their rhetoric, attitudes, or what they decide to discuss in this forum. Posts should be topically relevant in at least some tangential way--to be specific, related in some way to the exploration of SteamPunk issues and sex/gender roles, and/or the exploration of LGBTQ history and literature in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and preferably both/all of these things. This is not a place to complain about your relationship difficulties or encounters with oppression and discrimination, unless your significant other is a mad scientist, Victorian adventurer or airship pirate, or you were the victim of homophobia at the hands of a mad scientist, Victorian adventurer or airship pirate.

[Incidentally, "poof" is a more modern, perhaps post-Steam era British (and British diasporic) slang term for a homosexual (usually a male); when pronounced, it rhymes with "hoof" and "woof," not "cuff" or "aloof."]

If any of you are very clever with LJ profile designs, graphics, and the like, I'd appreciate having a co-maintainer or two...

Many thanks, dear gentlefolk, for your interest!
