How many sides does a snowflake have?

If you answered "It depends on the snowflake; they're all different," then you, much like Devin and my boyfriend, are lacking a vital piece of what I THOUGHT was common knowledge.
If you answered "Six," then we're on the same page.
I thought everyone knew that! Really! That is something everyone has known since elementary school, right? That snow crystals freeze into a hexagonal lattice, and thus snowflakes are six-sided and symmetrical six ways? THIS IS NOT AN OBSCURE PIECE OF USELESS TRIVIA! THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FACT THAT IS FUNDAMENTAL TO MY WORLDVIEW!
But somehow, this is news to Devin, Steve, Garrett, AND Jack, which is everyone I have checked with so far.
Jack seems to think that my level of shock at this state of affairs is pretty funny. And maybe it is. But really, I thought everyone knew about snowflakes! What ELSE do I take for granted?
This is just like in high school when I figured out that it is abnormal to look at someone through the tines of one's fork and say "Haha, you're in jail!" Seriously. I thought everyone did that at some point during their childhood. Nope. Apparently just my family. And they don't even all know about snowflakes.
